Role Overview
We are looking for a Senior Tailings Engineer to ensure compliance with the Health, Safety, and Reclamation Code for Mines in British Columbia and to promote a safety-first culture. In this role, you will provide technical support to Mill Operations, focusing on dam integrity and effective tailings deposition. You will lead complex TSF capital construction projects, collaborate with the Engineer of Record, and oversee maintenance operations.
Key responsibilities include reviewing technical proposals, monitoring compliance with deposition plans, and managing geotechnical investigations. You'll also support the professional growth of Engineers-in-Training (EITs) and optimize operational processes, budgeting, and reporting. Core Responsibilities
•Ensure compliance with Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines in British Columbia.
•Participate in and promote a safety-first culture.
•Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety, risk management, and environmental rules and procedures.
•Provide technical support and operational targets to Mill Operations as needed to ensure dam integrity and performance through ongoing safe and effective tailings deposition to meet design and storage requirements.
•Lead and direct large, complex, and/or multidisciplinary projects associated with TSF (Tailings Storage Facility) capital construction projects.
•Liaise with the Engineer of Record and the Gibraltar tailings management team for maintenance and operation of the TSF.
•Review technical proposals, design work, and report packages.
•Monitor, compile and review data to ensure compliance with the tailings deposition plan.
•Update and ensure compliance with the TSF Operation, Maintenance & Surveillance manual.
•Oversee reporting related to deposition, quality control and the site water balance.
•Liaise with the Engineer of Record and the Gibraltar water management team for maintenance and operation of the mine water management systems.
•Organize geotechnical investigations and laboratory testing.
•Manage contractors and external resources related to TSF activities.
•Lead and support the growth and professional development of EITs.
•Manage a wide variety of aspects in support of operations including:
+ Operational support, guidance, and production reporting.
+ Review of technical monitoring reports.
+ Optimization of deposition and sand production.
+ Deposition and construction scheduling.
+ Quality control and risk management for tailings deposition.
+ Budgeting, forecasting and cost tracking.
Education & Experience
•A degree in Civil, Geotechnical, Mining, or other related field of Engineering.
Skills & Competencies
•Professional Engineer Designation (P.Eng.) registered with or eligible to transfer to EGBC.
•At least 5-7 years of experience related to tailings storage design/management within the mining industry.
•Project management experience.
•Advanced analytical, problem solving and decision-making abilities.
•Strong interpersonal, communication and relationship management skills.
•Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite of software.
•Experience with ARCGIS, AutoCAD, Minesight and survey equipment would be considered an asset.
•Possess and maintain a valid Canadian Driver’s License.
