Surface Heavy Equipment Operator

Location: Clayton, Iowa Wage: $21.00 - $24.00/hour, based on experience Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent

Schedule: Monday- Friday primarily, some weekend work may be required.

Position Summary

Pattison Company is seeking a Surface Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team in Clayton, Iowa. This role plays a key part in our surface mining operations, working alongside our underground mine, aggregate crushing line, and sand processing team to extract and transport raw materials efficiently.

Operators will handle a variety of heavy equipment to perform complex excavation, earthmoving, and material handling tasks. We provide training to ensure that employees follow proper procedures, uphold safety standards, and work collaboratively as a team. Primary Responsibilities

- Operate a variety of heavy equipment, including graders, cranes, front-end loaders, excavators, and haul trucks

- Conduct pre-operational inspections to identify necessary maintenance or repairs

- Monitor equipment performance, gauges, and safety indicators during operation

- Maintain accurate records of time worked and materials used

- Follow company, local, state, and federal compliance and safety regulations

- Work collaboratively with team members to ensure smooth and safe operations

Qualifications & Requirements

- Previous heavy equipment operating experience required

- Ability to work in varying weather conditions and on uneven sandy/rocky surfaces

- Must be able to:

- Stand for 6-12 hours and perform physical tasks such as bending and stooping

- Work up to 12-hour shifts

- Climb on and off equipment and ladders

- Work at heights and in physically demanding conditions

- Wear a half-mask respirator for extended periods

- Lift 60 to 80 pounds without mechanical assistance

- Strong work ethic, ability to work independently, and commitment to workplace safety

Education & Experience

- High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required

- Prior mining experience preferred but not required

Certifications & Licenses

- MSHA Part 48 certification required (training available on-site)

- Valid driver’s license required for all Pattison Company employees unless deemed non-essential to the position by HR.
