The Field Superintendent is responsible for overseeing all on-site steel construction activities, with a strong focus on structural steel erection, field coordination, and jobsite safety. This role requires hands-on experience as an iron worker and the ability to lead crews through layout, erection, surveying, setting elevations, and final installation in accordance with project plans and specifications. The Superintendent routinely troubleshoots lower level issues involving workers, contractors, safety, quality, changes, or processes and facilitates solutions to keep the project on track. This supervision is conducted with the support and assistance of the administration and is most often coordinated with the Project Manager and President). Additional responsibilities include evaluating erection drawings and site plans, assigning crew tasks and gathering information related to project development for members of the office team.
- Supervise all field operations for structural steel and related construction work.
- Lead and coordinate iron workers, foremen, subcontractors, and other site personnel.
- Assign field crews as necessary for project scopes
- Oversee steel erection, bolting, welding coordination, and installation sequencing.
- Ensure scope completion in an efficient manner aligning with project budget and estimation plan
- Perform and verify field layout, surveying, alignment, plumb, level, and setting elevations.
- Interpret construction drawings, shop drawings, erection plans, and specifications.
- Ensure proper use of rigging, cranes, lifts, and material handling equipment.
- Maintain compliance with company safety policies and OSHA requirements.
- Conduct daily jobsite inspections, crew coordination, and progress meetings.
- Identify and resolve field issues, conflicts, and installation challenges.
- Creating and implementing new improvement standards
- Communicate with project managers, engineers, general contractors, and inspectors.
- Track manpower, equipment, materials, and daily production.
- Maintain accurate field reports, documentation, and punch list items.
- Support project closeout, turnover, and final completion.
- Motivating co-workers and increasing team dynamics
- Maintain field paperwork, log Non-Conformance Reports and document the project accordingly
- Experience with commercial, industrial, or heavy structural steel projects.
- Familiarity with crane picks, rigging, bolt-up, welding coordination, and field fit-up.
- Experience using surveying equipment and layout tools.
- Knowledge of misc. metals and steel fabrication/erection workflow.- 5+ years of experience in structural steel construction and field supervision experience.
- Strong background in steel erection, layout, surveying, and setting elevations.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, erection drawings, shop drawings, and specifications.
- Knowledge of structural alignment, tolerances, and field verification methods.
- Proven leadership skills with experience managing crews in the field.
- Strong understanding of construction safety practices and OSHA standards.
- Ability to solve problems quickly and make sound field decisions.
- Must be self-motivated & punctual
