SUMMARY
The Safety Specialist- IH plays a critical role in ensuring workplace safety by identifying, evaluating, and controlling chemical, physical, and biological hazards that may affect employee health. This position supports the development and implementation of industrial hygiene programs and ensures compliance with applicable regulations and internal standards.
- Exposure Assessments:
- Conduct assessments to identify chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic hazards.
- Perform personal and area noise dosimetry, and collect chemical exposure samples (e.g., BTEX, welding fumes, silica, asbestos, lead, VOCs).
- Collect detailed field notes of all exposure sampling activities.
- Complete chemical exposure field reports and maintain exposure assessment databases.
- Monitoring & Sampling:
- Conduct air, water, and noise sampling using appropriate industrial hygiene equipment.
- Perform NORM surveys on an as-needed basis.
- Compliance & Reporting:
- Ensure adherence to OSHA, NIOSH, EPA, and other regulatory guidelines.
- Prepare detailed reports with recommendations for corrective action.
- Assist in X-ray permit application processes and related compliance activities.
- Program Development:
- Support the creation and enhancement of IH programs and policies.
- Conduct onsite assessments to identify safety and hygiene gaps and inefficiencies.
- Training & Communication:
- Educate employees on hazard recognition, exposure prevention, and control techniques.
- Effectively communicate technical documents and regulatory references to various stakeholders.
- Systems & Data Management:
- Manage and maintain the MSDS online database, including:
- Approving new chemical requests.
- Adding and updating Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
- Assisting with chemical inventory integration, particularly during acquisitions.
- Manage and maintain IH exposure assessment database, including:
- Identifying similar exposure groups (SEGs)
- Uploading exposure assessment field notes
- Uploading exposure monitoring sample results
- Project & Equipment Management:
- Maintain IH equipment and ensure calibration and readiness.
- Assist in planning and executing IH-related projects as needed.
- Incident Response & Investigation:
- Participate in investigations involving chemical exposure or other IH-related incidents.
- Support 24/7 response as needed
Education and/or Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily. The requirements for this position are listed below:
- Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health, Occupational Health, or a related field.
- CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) certification or eligibility is preferred.
- 1–2 years of relevant experience in industrial hygiene or a related safety discipline.
- Strong understanding of OSHA, NIOSH, EPA, and related industry standards.
- Proficiency with industrial hygiene sampling instruments and software.
- Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Internet Explorer).
- Experience with HSE auditing and systems.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously with minimal supervision.
- Leadership potential and project management capabilities.
- Stationary work (sitting or standing) for up to 50% of the time.
- Traveling up to 30%, including overnight trips.
- Subject to 24/7 on-call duty for incident response.
- Fieldwork includes exposure to industrial environments, loud noises, extreme temperatures, hazardous materials, and the use of PPE.
