Senior Specialist, Compliance Assurance - Hybrid The Opportunity
Do you want to make a difference? The Senior Specialist, Compliance Assurance is part of a team that backstops everything we do at the AER.
We are looking for an enthusiastic team member to manage complex compliance files with varying degrees of organizational visibility and significance. This person will also provide advice, education and support on the strategic design and tactical delivery of all aspects of Compliance Assurance.
With a changing industrial landscape, we need an individual that can assess, recommend, and support compliance assurance with challenging licensee files as well as consistently provide compliance advice, education, and ensure the integrity of our enforcement actions. Are you that person?

What your day-to-day will look like:
- Conduct the evaluation, prioritization, and management of complex and comprehensive compliance files. Conduct evaluations, investigations, develop briefing packages to provide recommendations as to the most effective and appropriate regulatory actions to take. Support statutory decision makers (SDM) and actively work files to a compliance achieved result.
- Provide advice to SDM’s and engage with industry management to ensure consistent application and enforcement of the compliance assurance program. Review and edit proposed compliance assurance responses, submissions for appeals, and advise on compliance decisions. Support development of action plans and assist staff with regulatory principles, options and the use of enforcement tools.
- Monitor industry performance and regulatory actions to improve overall compliance.
- Provide subject matter advice and support to all AER staff who undertake inspection, audit, investigation, and enforcement activities across the organization.
- Provide education to internal and external stakeholders on the AER’s compliance assurance program. Monitor the delivery of compliance assurance activities to ensure continuous improvement and consistency.
- Provide subject matter advice and support of the strategic design and tactical delivery of AER’s compliance assurance program. This includes supporting the development and standardization of compliance assurance processes to create greater efficiencies and consistency in the delivery of compliance assurance activities across the organization.
- Supports the setting of AER requirements by providing advice on the development of clear, practical, and enforceable requirements.
- Work across all AER business units as required to ensure an integrated and enterprise-wide approach with regards to compliance assurance activities. This includes providing customized problem solving and developing tools and procedures to support and promote continuous improvement.
- Provide education and recommendations to improve the overall effectiveness of the compliance assurance program.
- Bachelor’s degree or related experience in regulatory, environmental sciences, enforcement, or a related field is preferred.
- 7+ years of related experience in an environmental, oil and gas, or regulatory field or a combination of education and experience will be considered.- Experience communicating with stakeholders within the energy industry, government, and the public is preferred.
- Experience managing complex compliance files and a broad understanding of oil and gas operations specifically related to regulatory compliance and risk assessment is preferred.
- Ability to provide planning expertise and reporting.
- Sound judgement, critical thinking skills, as well as decision-making skills.
- Excellent communications skills; written, listening, and verbal.
- Ability to work independently and in a team and fast paced environment, managing multiple and complex priorities, often simultaneously and dealing with change.

- Occasional travel in Alberta required up to 4 times per year.
