Sample Preparation Technician
Reporting to the Lab Supervisor the Sample Preparation Technician is primarily responsible for sample preparation of underground drill core, chips and muck samples in accordance with company and lab guidelines, standards and procedures. On occasion there may be other duties assigned by Lead Assayer, Lab Supervisor, and Chief Assayer during the course of a shift. They must be a committed team player with a strong knowledge of and dedication to Assay Lab, Mill safety and Milling production methods. Other duties will be assigned as per operational needs.
The list of duties and responsibilities below is not exclusive or exhaustive, and the employee will be required to undertake such duties as may reasonably be expected within the scope of the position. All employees are required to be professional, cooperative, and flexible in line with the requirements of the position.
Operational / Technical Execution
•Sample Receiving, Organizing and drying of samples, labeling sample bags as per sample tags.
•Execute and perform crushing, pulverizing and screening of geological materials as per Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s).
•Perform Screen tests on pulverized product and crushed product at the beginning of shift and when required.
•Replaces jaw plates and cheek plates when particle size requirements are not met.
•Prioritize samples to be prepped as per Lead Assayer.
•Proper sample storage and disposal of pulps and rejects.
•Assists in weighing/ mixing samples under supervision or when signed off to do so.
General Administration and Controls:
•Log in underground samples (Drill Core, Muck, Chip, Test Hole samples).
•Notify Lead Assayer (or designate) of any extra or missing samples compared with sample submittal sheets.
•Conduct pre-operational and post operational safety inspections on equipment and complete reports.
•Ensures all equipment related to Sample Prep is in good working order and notifies Lead Assayer of any concerns, equipment failures and/or deviations.
•Accurately recording/documenting sample tags with sample bags.
•Conduct routine quality checks including particle size analysis, dust loss and report data immediately to the Supervisor or group leader if results are outside of acceptability parameters.
•Ensure that work order documentation is complete in every respect and QC results are entered as necessary.
•Maintain clean and organized workbench area ensuring spills are immediately cleaned; disposal is according to laboratory procedures including any specific requirements for handling international soils.
•Keep all records and notebooks in good order including work order and equipment maintenance logs.
•Follows all laboratory procedures according to SOP’s while wearing ALL appropriate PPE.
Qualifications and Skills Requirement:
•Legal to work within Canada.
•Minimum 1-year previous assay experience.
•Good safety knowledge and understanding with the ability to recognize, reduce or eliminate hazards and situations that may cause problems.
•Strong organization and time management skills.
•Excellent verbal, written communication, and presentation skills.
•Must be physically fit and fit to work.
•Must work safely independently and in a team environment.
•The capability to work positively with a team of professional and technical people in a changing, creative, and energetic environment.
•Carry out routine reporting and administrative duties as required.
•Ability to lift 50 pounds.
