THIS POSITION IS LOCATED IN WEST HANTS
- Operate residential and recycling collection vehicles (side-load and/or rear-load) and associated hydraulic and ancillary equipment.
- Collect solid waste, yard waste, and recyclables along assigned routes.
- Load materials into the rear or side of the collection vehicle and compact waste safely and efficiently.
- Perform safe vehicle operation using prescribed techniques to prevent driver-induced mechanical issues.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections; complete daily vehicle reports, route sheets, and required documentation.
- Report mechanical issues or safety concerns to supervisors and maintenance staff immediately.
- Maintain route quality standards and ensure consistent service delivery.
- Follow all company, local, state/provincial, and federal safety and vehicle operation regulations.
- Keep vehicle clean and presentable, including cab interior and exterior.
- Identify, tag, and remove prohibited or unacceptable waste items.
- Supervise and direct assigned helpers when applicable.
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Report all accidents, incidents, or near-misses immediately.
- Maintain a professional appearance and courteous demeanor with customers and the public.
- Keep accurate service records and inventory of carts, containers, and spare parts.
- Recommend purchase of additional carts, containers, or parts as needed.
- Collaborate with supervisors to improve route efficiency.
- Attend safety meetings and training sessions.
- Work overtime as required and perform additional duties assigned by management.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- Minimum of one (1) year of commercial driving experience or completion of a CDL training program.
- Ability to meet safety-sensitive job requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to safely operate collection vehicles and equipment.
- Knowledge of collection vehicles, equipment, and basic maintenance for safe operation.
- Ability to maneuver large vehicles in tight spaces and back distances of 120 feet or more using mirrors.
- Ability to recognize and properly handle unacceptable or hazardous waste.
- Strong communication skills with supervisors, coworkers, and customers.
- Ability to read and understand maps, route sheets, and safety documentation.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Flexible and adaptable with a commitment to continuous improvement.
- Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 50 pounds repetitively using proper techniques.
- Ability to coordinate movements while sitting or standing.
- Strong commitment to workplace safety policies and procedures.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, balance, and use hands and fingers.
- Strong visual abilities, including depth perception and peripheral vision.
- Ability to lift up to 10 pounds regularly, 25 pounds frequently, and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to sit for extended periods (up to 75% of the workday).
- Ability to work in loud environments.
- Outdoor work environment with exposure to extreme weather conditions.
- Regular exposure to noise, vibration, moving machinery, fumes, and airborne particles.
- Continuous work in traffic conditions.
- Work performed away from the branch location throughout the day.
- Occasionally work in elevated or precarious areas.
