About This Job

At Ascend Commercial Builders, we are guided by five core values: Extreme Ownership, Expectation Management, Proactive Problem Solving, Transparent Communication, and Integrity Always. As our company continues to grow, we are seeking a Superintendent who not only demonstrates technical expertise but also embodies these values in their daily work. This role is critical to ensuring our projects are delivered with the highest standards of quality, accountability, and professionalism.

We are big believers in teamwork and enjoying who we work with so if this sounds like YOU please read on!

Essential Characteristics of a Superintendent at Ascend:

Attention to Detail – Focus on quality work every day and proactively identify issues before the client notices. The Superintendent is responsible for ensuring craftsmanship meets high standards—poor workmanship is the fault of the subcontractor, but failure to correct it falls on the Superintendent.
Background in Construction – While experience as a Superintendent is preferred, general knowledge of construction plans, trades, timelines, permitting, and subcontractor management is required.
Problem Solver – The Superintendent is the first line of defense in solving issues on the job site. Most problems can be addressed by engaging with subcontractors and reviewing the scope/plans. The Superintendent must be comfortable making significant decisions daily to keep the project on track.
Hungry – We're looking for individuals who are passionate about being on the construction site and eager to contribute to the company's growth. Ascend was built from the ground up, and we want team members who are ready to hustle, be flexible, and grow with us—those not just looking for a paycheck but committed to the mission.
The Superintendent (or 'Super') is the most critical role in a construction project. If the Super is not fully aware of every aspect of the project, the subcontractors will take control, which can lead to unpredictable outcomes and inconsistent quality. This lack of oversight can result in a final product that does not meet the high standards expected.
Oversee all aspects of the construction project, ensuring that all activities are carried out according to the project schedule, within budget, and meet quality standards.
Ensure subcontractors arrive as scheduled, maintain clear communication with owners, stay on track with project timelines, deliver high-quality work, and adhere to the established scope of work.
Establish the project schedule if one has not already been provided and ensure it is adhered to throughout the project.
Contact all subcontractors to inform them of the project start date and introduce yourself as the Superintendent responsible for overseeing the project.
Ask subcontractors if they have any concerns about the project. This proactive approach will provide the Super with a deeper understanding of potential challenges or difficult aspects of the project that may not have been identified yet.
Inform subcontractors of the estimated timeframes when they will be needed on-site. This is why having a schedule prepared beforehand is crucial, ensuring the timing is as accurate as possible.
Provide subcontractors with ample notice regarding when they will be needed on-site. We cannot expect subcontractors to be prepared if we do not communicate their required schedules in advance.
Communicate via telephone with the owner or owner’s representatives at least once per week to provide updates and ensure there are no outstanding questions or concerns.
Complete daily logs for each project. While the logs don't need to be exhaustive, they should include the subcontractors on-site, the work they are performing, and any issues or disputes with subcontractors. It’s crucial to note any instances where a subcontractor does not show up or fails to respond to calls or texts.
Assist the Project Manager in completing the weekly report to be sent to the owners. This can be done over the phone, but it must be completed either on Thursday or Friday morning to ensure the report is sent by the end of the day on Friday.
Ensure the building and project site are properly secured at the end of each day. We are responsible for all materials and items on-site, and must make a reasonable effort to lock all doors and secure the area to prevent loss or damage.
