Project Manager 1 - Aircraft Operations - Various locations
Number of positions: 1 Job Location: Coquitlam Office
Hours of work: Full-time (37.5 hrs/wk) Flexible Work Role: Hybrid
- Supports key aircraft operations department (AOD) functions and provides aviation-related technical and safety advice to
various internal and external parties, supporting the aircraft operations program mandate to direct and oversee
management of aircraft related risks across BC Hydro.
- Provides support to key aircraft operations functions, consults with internal and external parties on aviation-related job
planning considerations and BC Hydro aviation work procedure requirements and advises on aircraft operations processes.
- Teamwork, collaboration across business lines and delivering results are essential elements to be successful in this role.
- As Part of a team, provides rotational coverage of the AOD ‘Flight Desk’ in direct support of BC Hydro’s ‘Flight Approval
Process’. Administers the pre-approval of flight bookings and performs flight risk assessments, flight approvals and flight
activity coordination for daily flight operations involving charter helicopters, fixed wing aircraft and drones.
- Rotational coverage of the ‘flight desk’ requires the candidate to be available for after-hours stand-by coverage and work
on weekends and holidays. Candidates may also be required to be available for shift work.
- Acts as a project manager for low risk, medium impact/ complexity projects or as a task manager for higher risk/ impact/
complexity projects to improve the effectiveness or efficiency of the department or the aircraft operations program and
supporting documents.
- Exercises independent judgment in analysis and problem solving on highly complex and medium scope problems; uses
defensible approach in resolving problems where guidelines may not exist.
- Coordinates work and provides instruction and technical guidance; reviews work in progress and assesses completed
work for accuracy, required results and quality assurance.
- Minimum of 2 years experience planning, overseeing or performing helicopter operations (aircrew, operations support or
OR
- Minimum 2 years experience in drone operations to include thorough understanding of CARs RPAS regulations and
minimum of 2 years as Advanced Drone Certificated pilot with experience using drones in support of industrial applications
(some of this experience may be offset by formal RPAS post-secondary education)
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Working knowledge of rotary-wing aircraft, fixed wing aircraft, RPAS (drone) Canadian Aviation Regulations, WorkSafe BC
Occupational Health and Safety Regulations related to aircraft operations.
- Proficiency in using Nav Canada’s Aviation Weather Web Site (AWWS) and interpreting available meteorological products
such as Graphical Forecast Area (GFA), METAR/TAF, and others.
- Understanding of the principles and value of Aviation Safety Management Systems.
- The ability to think independently and apply good judgment and problem-solving skills.
- Proven self-starter; able to produce results while working independently or as part of a team.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to interact effectively.
- Well-organized individual with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
- Advanced English skills for professional environment, written and spoken.
- Business-level proficiency in the following Microsoft Office & Adobe applications is required: - Microsoft Word (Advanced-
level proficiency required) - Microsoft Outlook (Intermediate-level proficiency required) - Microsoft Excel (Basic-level
proficiency required) - Microsoft PowerPoint (Basic-level proficiency required) - Adobe Acrobat DC (Beginner-level
proficiency required) The candidate may be assessed on their overall level of computer proficiency prior to being selected.
Experience with Microsoft SharePoint is considered an asset.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience as Operations Manager, Base Manager, Quality Assurance Manager, Chief Pilot, Training Pilot, Safety
- Working knowledge of commercial helicopter operators certified under 702 ‘Aerial Work’ or 703 ‘Air Taxi’.
- Familiarity with Utility Aviation industry best practices.
- Commercial Rotary Wing Pilot’s License with 5 years’ general aviation experience flying for a commercial helicopter
service provider certified under 702 ‘Aerial Work’ or 703 ‘Air Taxi’. Electric utility flight operations experience is preferred.
- Commercial Fixed Wing Pilot’s License with 5 years’ general aviation experience flying for a commercial fixed wing service
- RPAS (drone) Basic or Advanced Pilot Certificate
- Knowledge of drones/remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) and applicable CARs Part IX — Remotely Piloted Aircraft
- Knowledge of physical and electrical hazards associated with performing utility flight operations in and around the Power
System and its associated infrastructure. This knowledge to include a basic understanding of the identification of circuit
voltages and various system componentry.
