JOB TERM: Contract – Term coverage 15 months


JOB OPPORTUNITY:

Bell Lumber & Pole MB ulc, formerly Roblin Forest Products, is hiring a Manager of Plant Operations to join our team in Roblin, MB . Our company is 115+-year-old family-owned and operated business with operations in both Canada and the United States. We are a manufacturer of wooden utility poles, fence posts, firewood and mulch. JOB PURPOSE:

The Manager of Plant Operations oversees and coordinates all plant operations to achieve production objectives efficiently while ensuring a safe working environment. As the leader of the Roblin team, the Manager of Plant Operations implements the vision set by the company's senior leadership team, driving continuous growth and business improvement. This role involves collaboration with various multi-functional teams, including finance, operations, sales, materials, quality assurance, business development, and human resources.


ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:


Operations:

Oversee day-to-day operations
Work with ownership to continuously develop strategies and set and refine goals for growth/improvement
Communicate business needs with Operations Manager, Sales Manager, Marketing Manager, Maintenance Manager, Production Manager and other internal leaders as required.
Ensure smooth running of all plant and office equipment and schedule maintenance and repair as needed.
Planning and forecasting of inventory (all types)
Work with ownership on cashflow forecasts and budgeting (incl. capital planning)
Overseeing recruitment and training of new employees, disciplining employees, appraisals, evaluations etc. and working closely with HR.
Evaluate results of operation, both financial and non-financial, on daily basis and provide regular reports to ownership.
Be a solution provider (e.g. unhappy customer, employee conflict, equipment malfunction, etc.)


Sales & Marketing:

Assist Bell's sales team with marketing strategies and pricing.
Maintain positive and healthy relationships with vendors and customers.
Work with Marketing Manager on communications, local exposure, and sponsorship opportunities.
Coordinate shipping schedules, freight information, and order schedules to optimize logistical efficiency and meet customer demands.


Production:

Ensure rough wood quality and volumes are acceptable.
Quality control.
Ensure maintenance and repairs of yard and production equipment


Safety and Environmental Monitoring:

Leadership of environmental and safety compliance and monitoring to ensure adherence
Ensuring PPE is up to date and available.
Act on suggestions by Yard Supervisor to ensure a safe working environment.
Work closely with environmental monitoring consultants.


Problem Solving and Decision Making:

Work with yard supervisor and production staff to ensure production and quality issues are addressed
Review operating recommendations made by Yard Supervisor and make strategic decisions.
Work with Yard Supervisor to oversee day-to-day staffing decisions


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises assigned staff. Fulfills supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.


JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent, or relevant combination of education and experience

Experience: 5+ years of experience in management; prior leadership experience preferred.

Experience in the forestry or lumber industry is an asset, experience in manufacturing for a minimum of 1 year required.


SKILLS BASED REQUIREMENTS:

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite with Windows operation required.
Understanding of math and volumes. Is proficient with basic math and can easily transpose formulas.
Planning/organizing - prioritizes and plans work activities, uses time efficiently and develops realistic action plans with detailed follow through.
Communication - demonstrates interpersonal oral communication skills by speaking clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations. Communications are clearly written with the audience identified, and the message is defined in an understandable format.
Dealing with ambiguity – is effective in coping with change and can comfortably manage risk and uncertainty.
Creativity – ability to create original and unique ideas and add value in brainstorming settings. Ability to think outside of the box.
Can diffuse even high-tension situations to drive to a comfortable result.
Willingness to make decisions, exhibit sound and accurate judgment, and make timely decisions for the result with limited direction. This would be after the initial training is completed.
Negotiate skillfully by settling differences and can win concessions without damaging relationships. Can be direct and forceful as well as diplomatic.
Technical Learning – ability to learn and comprehend new technical skills and knowledge


WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Sitting or standing while working on a computer for extended periods of time. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and is occasionally required to sit, talk, and hear, and to use hands to finger, handle or feel. The employee will frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, infrequently lift up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus. When in the yard, the work environment characteristics are best defined as an outdoor environment with exposure to elements such as heat, cold, precipitation, and wind. Employees will have moderate exposure to noise as heard in pole & post production yard, including exposure to higher noise levels associated with power equipment. Employees will have light exposure to the chemicals and solutions used in treating wood.
