The Payroll Manager’s primary responsibility is to ensure the company’s payroll is regularly processed in an accurate and timely manner and consistent with company policies. Reporting to the CFO, the Payroll Manager is responsible for collecting, verifying and processing payroll information, determining pay and benefit entitlements for employees and maintaining accurate payroll records. The Payroll Manager analyzes and processes labour hours, cost reports, annual T4s and prepares other reports and projects for the CFO as required.
- Processes and reviews, both a weekly and bi-weekly payroll.
- Manages the payroll cycles up to the final approval for the bank EFT stage, making sure that each employee has been balanced and paid accurately.
- Applies employee payroll deductions/payments as required, which can include expense reimbursements if applicable.
- Keeps track and balances all employee payment/remittances on various spreadsheets.
- Monitors vacation, personal time, rate changes and anniversary dates to make sure pay is accurate for each employee.
- Overseas that each employee has the correct income tax, CPP & EI requirements calculated for the processing of annual T4’s, along with taxable benefits.
- Administers worker’s compensation calculation and payment procedures and conducts the annual report reconciliation while observing province specific rules and regulations.
- Prepares and files T4s, workers compensation annual remittances, and NS MOST program statements.
- Balances group benefits and RRSP remittances to make sure they balance each month and are sent to finance for payment.
- Maintains knowledge of active union collective bargaining agreements and oversees payment of monthly remittances, union dues and union benefits according to each agreement.
- Updates payroll records by reviewing, approvals and scanning all changes to a shared directory.
- Complies with federal and provincial requirements by studying existing and new legislation for employment standards, EI, CPP and taxable benefit regulations, enforcing adherence to requirements and advising management on required changes.
- Ensures compliance with privacy rules and regulations.
- Completes all month end procedures on time and forwards to inside/outside departments as required.
- Adheres to all company policies, standards, procedures and safe work practices assigned.
- Degree or Diploma with a specialization in Accounting or Payroll.
- 5+ years in a position overseeing payroll processing.- Active member of the National Payroll Association (NPI) or training with the NPI to become a designated member would be an asset.
- Experience interpreting and applying union collective bargaining agreements as they pertain to compensation and benefits.
- High integrity and professionalism with the ability to maintain privacy and confidentiality.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with the ability to effectively manage competing priorities to meet assigned deadlines, independently or as part of a team.
- Strong attention to detail performing tasks accurately.
- Working knowledge of ADP Workforce Now & NetSuite would be an asset.
- Experience in the electrical and/or construction industry would be an asset.
