Black Hills Bentonite LLC’s (“BHB”) Mine Exploration Drill Rig Operator is a full-time position primarily focused on heavy equipment drilling during favorable weather periods. Activities include drilling auger samples to collect both infill mine and exploration data to help determine mining strategies. Duties during unfavorable weather periods could include heavy equipment operation and mechanical maintenance, depending on the individual’s experience. This position is part of BHB’s Regulatory Compliance Group (“RCG”).
1. Transport, set up and take down drilling equipment in various field locations. Exploration locations may be remote.
2. Drill “exploration” and “infill” mine site holes in the earth’s surface and accurately report the depth of overburden seams and bentonite beds to the Senior Geologist. The goal of “exploration” drilling is to search for future mining opportunities. The goal of “infill mine” drilling is to collect additional data at current mine sites to increase bentonite recovery accuracy.
3. Gather overburden soil and bentonite samples to be analyzed by the BHB laboratory.
4. Accurately read and follow maps of drillhole locations established by the geology staff.
5. Monitor and adjust drilling parameters and plans as necessary.
6. Partner with the Senior Geologist to communicate drilling data results to the company and any geologic issues encountered, such as faults or washouts.
7. Be mechanically inclined and have the ability to troubleshoot and perform routine maintenance on the company’s equipment.
8. Perform scheduled service, lubrication, and routine inspections on drilling equipment to prevent breakdowns and extend the lifespan of machinery.
9. Perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting on equipment as required.
10. Ensure the safety of the work environment by adhering to all safety regulations.
11. Identify potential failures and address issues proactively to reduce unplanned downtime.
· Coordinate with RCG team and mining field supervisors to create the most effective drilling paths, while minimizing disturbance areas.
· Inspect, maintain and operate the drill unit.
· Follow drilling plans, assist in facilitating equipment moves, and ensure quality data.
· Work with and have the ability to train new hires and assist in internship programs.
During periods when drilling operations are limited or suspended due to weather or operational needs, the Mine Exploration Drill Rig Operator will be assigned additional duties based on experience, skills, and company needs. Off-season responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
· Operate a variety of heavy equipment in support of mining, reclamation, maintenance, or material handling activities.
· Perform general maintenance activities, including equipment upkeep, facility maintenance, and site support tasks.
· Assist in the mechanic shop with equipment inspections, routine maintenance, repairs, and preventative maintenance tasks under the direction of maintenance personnel.
· Work collaboratively with multiple departments to support company operations during the non-drilling season.
· Other seasonal duties may be required based on operational priorities and individual qualifications.
The Mine Exploration Drill Rig Operator reports to the Senior Geologist during the drilling season and to a designated crossover manager during the non-drilling season.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a plus.
- Heavy equipment operations experience and a clean MRV driving record
- Aptitude for basic math calculations to record results of drillhole samples.
- Aptitude for heavy equipment operating and trouble shooting.
- Natural curiosity of piecing together drillhole data to create a clear mining strategy.
- Physical fitness and the ability to work in challenging terrain and weather conditions.
- Mechanic experience a plus.
- Easy to work with and a team player.
- Ability to work with multiple parties, such as BHB field teams, landowners and regulators, plus work independently as needed.
- Have good written and verbal communication skills.
- A positive attitude, strong work ethic, flexibility, and willingness to take personal ownership of projects and see them through to completion.

The Mine Exploration Drill Rig Operator is an hourly position.

BHB furnishes training, equipment, and necessary tools to complete jobs in a safe and timely manner.
This position will be based in Casper, WY and will require travel to field mine sites, potential mine sites, and other locations as needed. Transportation will be provided.
Position will frequently work in outside weather conditions.
Weekends are not normally required, but during the warmer months, this position should be flexible to work longer daylight hours, including early evenings and weekends on occasion as needed. Since warmer months are critical to the drilling program, the majority of any time off would need to be planned in colder months.
Employment is contingent upon passing a pre-employment drug test. Continued employment is dependent upon adherence to the Company’s drug policy which includes random drug testing throughout employment.
Schedule: Can vary. Typically a 10-hour shift 5-7 days per week during warmer months, and an 8-hour shift 5 days per week during colder months.
