Your career journey at ATCO has the potential to be full of new experiences, inspiring challenges, and growth without boundaries. Set your sights on how you want to grow and develop, and we’ll be right there to support you along the way. At ATCO Electric, we’ve been energizing homes, farms and businesses across north and east-central Alberta for more than 85 years. We serve nearly 229,000 customers in 242 communities and our service area covers nearly two-thirds of Alberta.
We are looking for an Environmental Studies/Computer Engineering student to join the ATCO Projects & Construction team. Work term starts in May 2026 for 8 or 12-month period in Edmonton.
As a Land Planner Co-op student, you’ll bring your knowledge of land use planning and environmental regulations to help us responsibly plan, route, and develop our transmission and distribution infrastructure. Reporting to a Supervisor in the Lands & Environment department, you’ll guide projects from the early planning stages through consultation and regulatory approval, ensuring environmental stewardship and strong relationships with the people and groups impacted by our work.
This position includes assisting and providing advice to internal and external stakeholders regarding regulatory applications and permits required for new projects, decommissioning projects, line mitigation and capital maintenance projects.
We’re looking for someone who cares about their work and strives for more each day. Someone who challenges the status quo, embraces change, and thrives in a collaborative work environment. If you are someone who approaches work with passion, curiosity and has the courage to innovate, then this role is for you.
- Must be enrolled in a co-op (or internship) program at a recognized Canadian university.
- Working towards a bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, Land Use Planning, Biology, Soil Sciences, or a related field such as Forestry, Agriculture, or Environmental Engineering.
- Or, working towards a Computer Software degree, with knowledge of SharePoint site management
- The ability to review and understand project work scope, execution strategies, construction activities and environmental impacts associated with electrical infrastructure development
- Knowledge of planning, land-use and environmental principles, normally acquired through a degree in planning or in an environmental field
- Knowledge of and experience with relevant legislation at Municipal, Provincial and Federal levels
- Ability to build collaborative relationships and communicate effectively — with both internal teams and external communities.
- Familiarity with GIS software (ESRI, ArcGIS Pro, etc.) and spatial data analysis.
- Experience working with data sources like FWMIS, Landscape Analysis Tool (LAT), AbaData, SPIN II, and GLIMPS.
- Experience with online permitting tools like RPATH, OPAC and DRAS.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and platforms like Microsoft Project, Teams and Power BI.
- A valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License.
- Indicate on your resume how many months you are available for and that you are applying for the May 2026 Co-op Term.
- Include your most recent transcript in your application.
- Identify potential planning and environmental risks during project scoping and assist with schedule and budget forecasting.
- Complete desktop and field-level assessments to flag sensitive environmental and land-use features.
- Analyze spatial and project data to assess constraints and opportunities, factoring in environmental, technical, social, and economic considerations.
- Work with consultants and contractors to ensure planning, routing, and environmental studies are completed to required standards, on time, and on budget.
- Help coordinate consultations and communications with landowners, local communities, Indigenous groups, government agencies, and other external parties.
- Prepare project notification materials and regulatory applications, liaising with Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, the Alberta Utilities Commission, and others as needed.
- Proactively work with internal teams — including land, engineering, construction, and operations — to develop mitigation strategies for concerns raised by external groups.
- Stay current with evolving regulatory and industry trends, ensuring compliance and supporting the continuous improvement of ATCO’s environmental and planning practices.
- Support project field visits, contractor orientations, training, and reporting related to land and environmental compliance.
- Review and digitization of historical (hard copy) environmental assessments, surveys and permits
- Assist with SharePoint site management, project tracking and the standardization of templates
