Position Summary
We are seeking a versatile and motivated individual to join our team as a Lead NERC Compliance Specialist. This role will oversee critical projects to develop, implement, and sustain robust NERC compliance programs; support internal controls design and evidence management for partners; provide subject matter expertise on key NERC Reliability Standards; and liaise with regulatory bodies and client teams. Roles and Responsibilities
This role will be responsible for serving as a subject matter expert on NERC regulatory standards, compliance assurance, and grid reliability assurance. The role will involve leading compliance program development, audit readiness, and risk management, while providing coaching to team members and clients. The following are a list of roles, responsibilities, and projects related to this position:
•Lead and manage comprehensive NERC compliance programs, driving continuous improvement to adapt to evolving standards and industry best practices.
•Develop, implement, and sustain robust internal controls and evidence management systems that ensure consistent audit readiness.
•Provide subject matter expertise on NERC standards compliance (CIP, PRC, FAC, MOD, TOP, etc.), offering interpretation, implementation guidance, and risk-based strategies.
•Drive cross-functional collaboration with engineering, operations, IT, and external partners to integrate compliance processes into overall business operations.
•Lead and support audit preparation activities, including self-certifications, spot checks, data requests, and on-site audits, ensuring clients meet or exceed regulatory obligations.
•Develop risk-based compliance assessments and analytics dashboards to identify areas of improvement, trends, and emerging risks.
•Draft and maintain compliance documentation, including policies, procedures, training materials, and evidence packages tailored to specific NERC standards.
•Leverage automation tools, digital platforms, and data analytics to streamline compliance processes and improve evidence management.
•Deliver presentations and workshops to clients and industry stakeholders, sharing insights and best practices in compliance and grid reliability.
•Support and mentor team members, fostering knowledge sharing and continuous development.
•Stay current with evolving NERC standards, FERC regulations, grid modernization trends, and emerging technologies such as renewable integration and advanced analytics.
•Serve as an industry thought leader, establishing relationships with compliance professionals, regulatory staff, and key industry stakeholders; actively engage in industry discussions.
•Meet with clients (virtual and in-person, as needed) to understand needs and provide strategic, actionable guidance.
Qualifications
Candidates should have the following required qualifications:
•Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, power systems, regulations, compliance, or a related field from an accredited four-year college or university.
•Minimum 7+ years of progressive experience in NERC compliance program management, audit readiness, or related roles.
•Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing comprehensive compliance programs, including internal controls and evidence management systems.
•Deep understanding of NERC standards (CIP, PRC, FAC, MOD, TOP, etc.)
•Demonstrated experience navigating NERC and Regional Entity audits, spot checks, and regulatory interactions.
•Preferred certifications such as NERC-Certified System Operator (NERC-Certified), CISSP, CRCM, or equivalent.
•Strong knowledge of risk-based compliance methodologies and familiarity with compliance management systems.
•Excellent communication skills, with a proven ability to translate complex regulatory requirements into actionable guidance.
•Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams, collaborate effectively across departments, and foster a culture of compliance.
•Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with clients, regulators, and industry stakeholders.
•A self-starter with a passion for continuous learning, innovation, and problem-solving.
Physical requirements for this role include:
•Must be able to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods of time at a computer.
•Ability to travel to job sites, both in an office environment and in the field.
