Lead Automation & Controls Engineer

is seeking an experienced

to join our growing engineering and design team. This is a senior-level, leadership role offering the chance to shape and expand our in-house automation and controls capabilities while mentoring the next generation of engineers.

Chapman Consulting, Inc. (CCI) is a full-service engineering and project management consulting firm specializing in industrial piping and facilities. We provide pipeline, process piping, instrumentation, structural, electrical, mechanical, civil engineering, and drafting. Being located in Lafayette, Louisiana, provides us with a central location to serve the southeastern United States, as well as the ability to mobilize to points beyond.

Key Responsibilities:

- Lead design engineering for automation and controls systems: equipment selection, control element sizing, electrical/control drawings, and integration with process systems.

- Provide technical leadership and mentorship for junior engineers and drafters; delegate project tasks, oversee quality, and develop staff proficiency through active coaching and coordination with formal training programs.

- Oversee and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring technical accuracy and timely delivery.

- Serve as technical lead within multidisciplinary teams, coordinating with mechanical and civil engineers on broader project scopes.

- Interface with clients on larger projects to define scope, clarify design requirements, and ensure client satisfaction.

- Ensure design readiness, documentation, and integration requirements are met.

- Support or direct related studies (e.g., arc-flash via KSM) as required by project scope.

Required Background & Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited program.

- Professional Engineer (PE) license required.

- Significant prior experience in automation/controls engineering; preferably in the midstream/pipeline sector.

- Strong expertise in control system design, electrical/control schematics, and integration with process systems.

- Experience leading engineering teams and mentoring junior staff.

- Ability to take initiative, independently drive projects forward, and lead by example.

Work Environment:

Location:

Lafayette, LA; Lake Charles or Baton Rouge considered. In-office leadership presence is strongly preferred.

Reporting:

Directly to the VP of Engineering.

Team:

You’ll initially oversee ~2 engineers and collaborate closely with drafting staff.

Collaboration:

Work as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team across a variety of challenging projects.
