Our continued growth has created the need for an experienced Automation Controls Engineer to join our Team.
This role requires working across technical and customer domains in a variety of physical environments both remotely and at the job site. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading automation projects from design through start-up and commissioning. Candidates should have relevant experience in controls engineering, a rigorous attention to detail, an aptitude for learning new systems, and the ability to self-manage work with limited supervision. Daily activities of this technically focused role include, but are not limited to, programming software applications for controls systems, completing checkouts of manufactured control equipment, and commissioning control systems at the customer’s site. Finally, on call troubleshooting and follow-up controls work is a responsibility of this position. Regional travel with overnight stays is required (about 25%).
- Review project plans, specifications, electrical schematics, network diagrams, and process instrumentation.
- Develop control system logic and visualization using PLC, HMI, and SCADA software.
- Perform factory testing and checkout of control equipment and software.
- Field start-up and commissioning of controls systems at customer site.
- Review controls system design and operation documentation provided to customer.
- Troubleshoot and remedy customers’ malfunctioning controls equipment and SCADA systems.
- Act as customer’s primary point of contact, developing and maintaining long term relationship.
- Project management internally within In Control and externally with customers, construction contractors, consulting engineers, vendors, and other partners.
- Identify and resolve project issues and report work progress.
- Work collaboratively with the Sales, Design, Manufacturing, and SCADA Engineering Teams to ensure successful completion of each project.

- Experience in application programming and integration across a variety of hardware/software platforms.
- Able to manage project work across team members, identify and resolve project issues, and report work progress while mindful of project deadlines.
- Demonstrated outstanding oral and written communications skills with coworkers and customers.
- Minimum of a four-year degree in relevant technical field and four years’ experience in controls engineering or control system programming. Additional years’ experience may substitute for formal technical education.
- Ability and willingness to travel to customer sites in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Wisconsin.
- Comfortable working in the field at customer locations and in a variety of construction site conditions.
- Proficiency programming and commissioning Rockwell Automation products and/or Schneider, GE, etc. required.
- PLC programming experience with Rockwell CompactLogix and MicroLogix strongly preferred.
- OIT and SCADA programming experience with FactoryTalk View ME/SE, VTScada, or Ignition preferred.
- Working knowledge of electrical control panel design, MCC’s, VFD’s, and process instrumentation preferred.
- Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Project).
