POSITION SUMMARY:
MPC is currently seeking a lab technician for its laboratory which provides services to the MPC Detroit refinery in Detroit, MI. This position could work an "extra relief" schedule which includes days, afternoon's, and nights. The position will rotate the work days/days off weekly and include weekends.
Paid training is provided for all new hires. The starting rate is $42.50, and is a union position with Teamsters Local 283.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Analyze process samples and final products per standard operating procedures in a timely manner to accommodate the needs of the refinery.
•Verify all data before reporting information to verify quality and ensure compliance with product specifications, test method standards, and regulations.
•Coordinate sample testing with other technicians to improve turnaround time for reporting all data.
•Prioritize work based on the needs of the refinery.
•Perform special testing projects, i.e. round robins, bench blends, etc. on an as-needed basis.
•Deliver routine supplies to, and gather collected samples from, process units in a timely manner to provide efficient turnaround of results.
•Ensure functionality of equipment by checking instrument and standard specific statistical quality control charts and perform periodic calibration and maintenance.
•Observe expiration dates, low reagent volumes, gas cylinder pressures, etc. to ensure adequate consumables and resources are available for all testing.
•Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting for instrumentation to achieve maximum equipment availability.
•Maintain and update laboratory supply inventory to ensure continuity and safety of work.
•Communicate to relief all relevant information about the refinery, i.e. unit specifications and upsets, off-spec results, samples in progress and instrument problems, etc.
•Review electronic shift log at start of shift and sign-off at end of shift by adding pertinent information.
•Record test information into logbooks, verify electronically transferred data or enter results into SampleManager (LIMS) and approve Certificates of Analysis (C of A’s), as required.
•Report missing samples, problems, environmental concerns and off-spec results (when needed) to appropriate complex operators and/or Supervisor.
•Receive and conduct on-the-job training (OJT) to perform analytical techniques and methods for improving lab capability.
•Maintain corporate standards by completing computer-based training (CBT).
•Improve proficiency by reading analytical methods, adopting procedural updates, and reviewing instrument manuals and technical journals to meet personal, team and company objectives.
•Participate in relevant training events to increase personal development.
•Maintain a clean and organized work environment to promote health, safety, and work efficiency in the lab.
•Place hazardous material in proper waste containers and store all retained samples according to Basic Practice procedures.
•Transfer hazardous waste and empty solvent and reference fuel drums to the warehouse for proper disposal.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
•A 4-year science degree with four college chemistry courses and two college chemistry labs is required.
•Computer proficiency with standard desktop applications, e.g. Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Outlook is required.
•A valid Driver's License is required.
•Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) is preferred.
