The Position
Lab Technician
Job Summary
As a Lab Technician based at our Johns Creek Innovation center for the North America Building & Infrastructure (B&I) market, you will support the mortar and concrete business portfolio encompassing cements, formulated products, and additives. You will perform specialized application and analytical testing to drive the development of new products and adapt existing solutions to meet customer needs. Your work ensures that all products meet rigorous quality standards while providing critical technical support to our regional sales objectives.

Key Tasks And Responsibilities
- Technical Execution: Complete Technical Assistance Requests (TAR) and operational support through advanced laboratory testing, utilizing both standard routines and specially adapted experimental processes.
- Innovation & Project Support: Collaborate with the S&T Team Leader and Technical Service Managers (TSM) to troubleshoot formulation challenges and contribute to new product development projects.
- Data Management: Meticulously record experimental data, observations, and conclusions; interpret results and author formal technical reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Laboratory Stewardship: Proactively maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment, integrating electronic data acquisition systems where applicable.
- Safety Leadership: Serve as a daily role model for laboratory safety, strictly implementing safety procedures and maintaining a clean, compliant working environment.
- Customer & Field Interaction: Attend external test trials or field sites to demonstrate TAR results and provide technical investigations into customer complaints or product quality issues.
- Professional Development: Stay current with industry trends by attending technical conferences and learning new testing methodologies as required by the R&D roadmap.
- Degree: Bachelor’s degree in Material Science, Chemistry, Mineralogy, or a related scientific field plus 3 years experience OR 5 years applicable, professional experience or at least 5 years of experience in laboratory environments, specifically within the building materials or mineral industries.
- Technical Proficiency: Proven expertise in organic-mineral interactions, cement chemistry, and mechanical testing.
- Formulation Skills: Hands-on experience formulating dry-mix mortars and the ability to manipulate product performance through formulation adjustments.
- Lifting/Carrying: Lifts and carries up to 50 lbs.
- Standing/Walking/Movement: Extensive standing and walking while carrying out lab duties, up to 50-75% of a shift. Exposure to repetitive movements.
- Bending/Stooping/Crouching: Be able handle materials up to 50 lbs while bending/stooping/crouching to retrieve materials from racking, under bench, and other areas.
- Reaching/Grasping: Must be able to reach overhead and at or below shoulder level to retrieve items in overhead cabinetry.
- Climbing: May require ascending and descending ladder or stairs.
- Pushing/Pulling: Push or pull a cart of up to 150 lbs unassisted.
- Environment: Must be willing to work in dusty conditions, exposure to cement dust, silica dust, and other raw materials while using appropriate PPE. Occasional field trials that may lead to exposure to varied outdoor conditions. Exposure to noisy equipment such as shock tables, mixing equipment, cutting equipment, and pumping equipment.
- Analytical Rigor: Strong background in the Design of Experiments (DoE) and analytical method development.
- Project Management: Ability to plan personal workflows within the constraints of larger research programs; experience in project management is highly desirable.
- Technical Troubleshooting: Ability to connect laboratory equipment to PCs for data acquisition and troubleshoot basic electronic interfaces.
- Communication: Strong written and verbal skills for report writing and presenting data to both technical and non-technical audiences.
