Job Summary
We are seeking a Junior Analytical Chemist to work in our research and development (R&D) pilot plant facility. This role will support production and R&D activities using a wide array of analytical techniques (GC, GCMS, HPLC, GPC, SEC, NMR, molecular spectroscopies, polymer analyses, etc).
To be successful in this position, the analytical chemist must have the aptitude to effectively manage day-to-day laboratory duties and task lists with a high level of ownership. Biofuels are unique class of compounds and utilize a wide range of analytical methods and techniques from the petroleum, fragrance, natural products, and biochemistry industries.
This job will have standard work hours with occasional weekend work as needed to support production goals.
The Junior Analytical Chemist will work under immediate supervision of the Senior Analytical Chemist.
Responsibilities
- Analyze organic and inorganic compounds to determine chemical or physical properties, composition, structure and/or reaction products using chromatography, spectroscopy, and other methods as needed.
- Will assist Senior Analytical Chemist, scientists, and engineers with research projects, interpret test results, and develop non-standard methods.
- Maintain laboratory instruments to ensure analytical accuracy and troubleshoot issues as needed.
- Significant portion of the role will be spent on method development and validation work.
- Follow OSHA and other safety guidelines to maintain a safe and hazard-free work environment.
- Other job duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, and Knowledge:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry is required, master's degree candidates will also be considered. Please no PhD applicants.
- Two to four years of experience in an analytical chemistry setting (R&D or quality control capacity in pharmaceuticals, environmental or petroleum industries, etc).
- Candidate must be knowledgeable in all aspects of analytical chemistry (i.e. theory, instrumentation, instrument qualifications, system software, method development, and method validation).
- Experience with a wide spectrum of analytical instrumentation (spectroscopy, chromatography, NMR, viscosity, aqueous chemistry, titrations, Karl Fischer, etc.).
- New method development experience and experience running standardized methods (ISO, ASTM, EPA, ICH, USP, etc).
- Prior experience with natural products, fragrances/flavors, and petroleum products or experience with flammable hydrocarbon compounds is preferred.
- Demonstrated proficiency in common computer tools and web-based applications is required.
- Our laboratories are equipped with Agilent and Metrohm instrumentation and experience with these platforms is desired but not mandatory.
- Prior experience successfully participating in teams where safety, personal accountability, attention to detail, collaboration, and results were required.
Preference will be given to local candidates.
Physical Demands
Frequent lifting and moving of items up to fifty (50) pounds, bending, reaching above shoulder level, climbing stairs, pulling, prolonged standing or sitting may be required. Must have safe work habits and perform all duties in accordance with company safety policies.
This position requires the use of personal protective equipment that may include eye or face protection, gloves, masks, respirators, safety shoes, earplugs, coveralls and/or uniforms that are provided by the company and its use is mandatory. All duties in accordance with company safety policies and practices.
