The Fleet Safety Specialist is responsible for overseeing the safe operation, compliance, and performance monitoring of the company’s fleet. This role works collaboratively with operations, safety, and fleet management teams to ensure all drivers and vehicles comply with FMCSA regulations, company policies, and industry best practices. The Fleet Safety Specialist will also lead vehicle safety audits, telematics data review, incident investigations, and corrective action implementation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
•Monitor daily fleet safety operations and compliance with DOT/FMCSA, PHMSA, and company safety policies.
•Review and analyze telematics data (e.g., Samsara) to identify unsafe driving behavior, trends, and training needs.
•Coordinate driver qualification file (DQF) compliance, including CDL/medical card tracking, MVRs, and annual reviews.
•Conduct post-incident reviews for vehicle collisions or violations; lead root cause analysis and recommend corrective actions.
•Collaborate with the field safety team on driver coaching sessions and targeted safety training.
•Assist in developing and updating the fleet safety manual, driver policies, and procedures.
•Oversee vehicle inspection, DVIR compliance, and maintenance record auditing.
•Support onboarding of new drivers, including initial safety orientation and driver evaluations.
•Participate in insurance reviews, compliance audits, and claim investigations.
•Track and manage driver safety scores and develop improvement plans with supervisors.
•Lead monthly or quarterly safety briefings focused on vehicle operation, distracted driving, and defensive driving practices.
Qualifications
•Minimum of 3 years of experience in fleet safety, transportation safety, or DOT compliance, preferably in construction or utility industry.
•Strong knowledge of FMCSA regulations, DOT recordkeeping, and vehicle inspection protocols.
•Proficient in using fleet telematics platforms (e.g., Samsara, Verizon Connect, Geotab).
•Excellent communication and coaching skills.
•Ability to lead investigations and write clear, factual reports.
•Detail-oriented with strong organizational and recordkeeping abilities.
•Valid driver’s license; CDL preferred but not required.
Preferred Certifications
•OSHA 30-hour Construction (OSHA 10 required)
•Smith System Driver Trainer (or similar defensive driving certification)
