Exciting Opportunity: Controller – Marine Platform Builder (Government Sector)
We are a fast-growing marine platform builder expanding rapidly in the government supply space. We are seeking a driven and detail-oriented Controller to lead our accounting operations, establish robust financial policies, ensure regulatory compliance, and streamline financial systems. This is a pivotal leadership position that collaborates closely with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and works across all departments to support strategic growth and operational excellence.
· Build and lead the Accounting Team; provide direct supervision, support, and process optimization.
· Recruit, train, mentor, and evaluate accounting staff; take corrective action as needed in coordination with HR.
· Lead development of company budgets and forecasts across departments and government contracts.
· Provide variance analysis and financial performance updates to the CFO.
· Identify and recommend cost-saving strategies to support company-wide efficiency.
· Develop and enforce company-wide financial policies and procedures.
· Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations, especially related to government contracting and defense industry requirements.
· Design and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and minimize risk.
· Coordinate the preparation of internal and external financial reports, including cash flow statements and P&L summaries.
· Support annual audits and any government-required financial reviews.
· Oversee audit preparation and ensure proper documentation and procedures are in place.
· Oversee all core accounting functions: accounts payable, accounts receivable, collections, payroll, and job costing.
· Review and approve journal entries, corrections, and general ledger postings.
· Manage shared cost allocations and maintain reconciliations across accounts.
· Partner with Program Managers, Operations, and Project Leads to align financial practices with project objectives and timelines.
· Provide training and technical guidance to team leads on budget management and financial tracking tools.
· Recommend and implement financial technologies to improve speed and accuracy.
· Monitor expenditures against contract budgets and ensure alignment with contractual obligations.
· Maintain accurate billing and cost tracking procedures for federal and state contracts.
· Lead the implementation and optimization of the SAGE ERP system.
· Ensure system integration supports reporting, audit trails, and scalability as the company grows.
· Take on special projects or responsibilities as assigned by the CFO or executive team.
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA preferred.
· Minimum 5 years of experience managing accounting operations in a government contracting, manufacturing, or industrial business environment.
· Experience supporting financial oversight in a product-based or platform-building company is strongly preferred.
· Strong knowledge of GAAP and cost accounting standards.
· Advanced proficiency with SAGE ERP and Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, modeling, and macros).
· Familiarity with DCAA compliance, job costing, and contract billing requirements is a plus.
· Demonstrated success in building and managing high-performing accounting teams.
· Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and project management abilities.
· Clear and effective communicator capable of working across technical and non-technical teams.
Salary: $85,000 – $100,000 per year (commensurate with experience)
