Hours of Work: M-Th, 6 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a basic understanding of Land Surveying and GIS data collection techniques. This candidate will need the technical abilities operating Surveying instruments such as RTK GPS units, Total Stations, data collectors and Windows PC's. In addition, this candidate will need to learn basic water infrastructure as it pertains to GIS data collection. The ideal candidate will have a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and have the ability to work individually or as a team. The candidate will need the social skills to collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders and have the ability to handle social pressure from construction work environment. The candidate will physically be required to work in the outdoors under difficult environmental conditions, have a clean driving record and be willing to work nights, and some weekends.

This position is a flex position. Candidates will be hired in at a level I, with a starting salary of $30.42 hourly. After a 12-month period, the selected candidate will be evaluated to determine if they meet the criteria to flex to a level II, with a starting salary of $35.22 hourly.


GENERAL PURPOSE

Under supervision, performs technical GPS data collection of existing District facilities, interprets plans and specifications to properly identify and collect facilities, deposits collected data in the GIS database using accepted software download procedures; and performs related duties as assigned.


DISTINGISHING CHARACTERISTICS

GPS Data Collection Technician is the entry-level class in the Survey Technician series. Initially under supervision, incumbents learn proper inspection techniques and perform a variety of duties involving the collection of District facilities, using state of the art survey and resource grade GPS equipment. Incumbents are expected to understand basicGPS data collection techniques, read and interpret water facility plans and schematics and be able to perform the various computer related requirements for downloading and processing collected GPS data.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties listed below are intend only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or I a logical assignment to this class.

Researches, locates and verifies underground water utility lines, valves and appurtenances using survey and resource grade GPS equipment. Provides GPS data collection of pipe and vault structures, obtains measurements as pipeline and related structures are being installed.

Uses a computer to down load and process data collection information to appropriate District database for inclusion in facility asset management, as-built plans and specifications or related GIS or engineering drawings.

Prepares daily reports and periodic progress reports on collection data, maintains records and performs file research.


OTHER DUTIES

Coordinates data collection practices and procedures with other members of the department and others as may be necessary.


Operates vehicles to conduct fieldwork.

Sets up and maintains complete records for equipment maintenance, repairs and upgrades.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


Knowledge of:

Terminology, methods, practices, techniques and nomenclature of civil, mechanical and/or electrical drawings; proper usage of GPS equipment, data collection software and feature code libraries, understanding of basic GPS technology; surveying practices and procedures relating to data collection; computer knowledge with down loading and data processing procedures; elementary surveying mathematics that encompasses some algebra, geometry and trigonometry; safety requirements and procedures pertaining to work practices; and familiarity with the Clark County geographic area.


Ability to:

Read, analyze, document and evaluate water facilities engineering drawings, sketches, diagrams, specifications, land plats, maps and other diagrams; operate common surveying equipment, other small tools and a two-way radio; communicate effectively both orally and in writing using clear and concise technical language; work independently in the field; establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrative staff, engineers, public and private entities and the public.


Training and Experience:

A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school, trade school, vocational school, or

G.E.D. equivalent; college-level courses in surveying or engineering practices; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

This position requires a valid Nevada driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's Vehicle Insurance Policy.
