About This Job

The Opportunity:

Company, Department: Nova Scotia Power, Eastern Clean Energy Initiative

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia

Closing Date: June 19, 2025

Our roadmap for the Path to 2030 is aligned with the province’s Clean Power Plan. It’s going to take a mix of energy solutions to enable us to reach 80% renewable energy. Together, we know we need to reach our climate goals while doing what’s best for Nova Scotians — balancing costs and ensuring that as your electricity gets greener, it stays reliable, too. The Eastern Clean Energy team plays a pivotal role in getting us there.

We are looking for an Environmental Compliance Monitor to join our Eastern Clean Energy team. Reporting to the Environment Manager, the Environmental Compliance Monitor is responsible for site monitoring of various projects, documenting observations, and making recommendations for contractor compliance with the Environmental Protection Plan (EPP). The main job requirements will involve environmental monitoring for the Wasoqonatl Transmission Line Project, the NS-NB Reliability Intertie from Onslow to New Brunswick.

Note: this is a term position with an expected end date of December 2028.

Key elements of this role include::

Monitoring environmental performance of contract service providers as it relates to the environmental management system processes and initiatives.
Working collaboratively with the Project Team and Contractors to achieve EPP requirements.
Interpreting the EPP and permit requirements to construction activities in the field.
Documenting findings in a GIS phone app, including photos.
Enter Nova Scotia Power Safety and Environmental Incident Reports and review Contractor Incident Reports.
Coordinate level of effort with the environmental aspects of construction activities; specifically monitoring activities with potential environmental effects (e.g. installation of temporary bridges, culverts, and wetland crossings).
Providing oversight of contractor’s environmental mitigation and spill response.
Review of contractor’s installation of Erosion and Sediment Controls.
Preparation and presentation of environmental information for public presentations.
Attending meetings at Nova Scotia Power Lower Water Street office in Halifax when needed.
Working safely and independently in the field year-round in a variety of environments and weather conditions.
Maintaining supportive and respectful working relationship with Mi’kmaq Community Monitors.

These skills will make you successful::

To thrive in this role, you recognize yourself in most of the following competencies and skills listed below. Some of these skills would be considered assets but are not required:

Education & Experience

Bachelor of Science degree, (preferably in ecology, biology, environmental science, etc.), or a relevant field OR a related diploma with equivalent professional experience.
Minimum 3 years’ experience in the construction industry and assessing environmental compliance is an asset.
Field experience and an understanding of contractor compliance is an asset.
Experience in spill response is an asset.
Contaminated Site Professional with experience in Phase I or II environmental site assessments is an asset.

Technical/Job-Specific Knowledge and Abilities

Demonstrated ability to work independently.
Ability to read a GPS and navigate to site.
An understanding of risk assessment and risk management concepts.
Awareness of provincial and federal environmental assessment legislation, regulations, and processes.
Focus and a commitment to working safely and looking out for others.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and make independent decisions in a timely manner.
Ability to address and de-escalate conflict.
Possess a valid Nova Scotia Driver’s License (Class 5 with 2 years minimum driving experience) and have a clean driver’s abstract.

We understand that experience comes in many forms, and we’re dedicated to adding new perspectives to the team. So, if your experience is close to what we’ve listed above, please consider applying.

This role involves working closely with Mi’kmaw Community Monitors

Preference will be given to individuals identifying as Mi’kmaq, followed by those who have lived experience with First Nations or mixed ancestry communities, or identify as having Indigenous heritage.
