Director, Transfers, Statement of Concerns & Operations - Hybrid The Opportunity

Join the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) as our Director, Transfers, Statements of Concerns (SOC) & Operations and help shape the future of energy regulation in Alberta. In this high‑impact senior role, you will provide leadership and direction on strategic, operational, financial, human resources and regulatory matters to ensure your group makes timely and responsible decisions that support the AER’s mandate and strategic priorities, as well as policy direction set by the Government of Alberta.

Reporting directly to the Vice President, Regulatory Applications (RA), you will oversee work related to transfers, eligibility, security and statements of concern, bringing clarity, sound judgment, and strategic perspective to complex regulatory files so that outcomes are informed, consistent, and trusted.

In the Regulatory Applications Branch, we take pride in offering meaningful, challenging, and high-impact work. We’re looking for someone who thrives in a fast paced, dynamic environment that values sound decision‑making and accountability, while also supporting employee wellness, professional development, and work‑life balance.

What your day-to-day will look like:

- Set the direction, guide and lead the Transfers, SOC & Operations teams, ensuring regulatory work is delivered in compliance with legislation, policy, and AER frameworks, and aligned with branch and organizational priorities.

- Drive branch results by establishing clear priorities, monitoring progress against strategic objectives, and using performance and quality metrics to strengthen regulatory effectiveness and promote continuous improvement.

- Provide people leadership that builds team capability and resilience, set clear expectations, develop future leaders, support workforce planning and recruitment, and guide teams through change. Champion AER people‑management practices that foster inclusion, well‑being, and sustained performance.

- Champion the consistent application of the AER’s Integrated Decision Approach (IDA) and lead regulatory and transformational changes that enhance decision‑making and improve oversight across the full energy development life cycle.

- Develop and manage both operational and project-specific budgets, ensuring cost-effective use of funds.

- Foster strong collaboration across the Regulatory Applications branch and the broader enterprise, promoting an “enterprise‑first” approach to regulation. Represent the AER’s strategic objectives in engagements with Indigenous communities, government partners, and other external stakeholders, ensuring regulatory decisions are inclusive and respected.

What we’re looking for in you:

- Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Resource Management, Environmental Science, Engineering or a related field.

- 15+ years of energy industry knowledge, in depth and broad knowledge of energy and specified enactment regulations. - 8+ years of people management experience and demonstrated leadership and mentoring of diverse, high-performing teams across various disciplines. Skilled in driving engagement and creating inclusive environments that support innovation and team growth.

- Fundamental understanding of technical aspects of liability management and closure processes and the relevant, associated legislations.

- Demonstrated success leading large‑scale transformational change at the senior leadership level, ensuring outcomes that align with organizational values and long-term priorities.

- Exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills to enable impactful contributions and positive influence.

- Strong sense of collaboration, with a positive and professional approach to communication; encouraging an open, sharing and supportive workplace.

- Unquestionable integrity, ethics and values aligned with organizational values and the ability to treat all information with a high level of confidentiality.

- Strategic, forward‑thinking mindset with the ability to assess the broader landscape and apply critical thinking to drive informed decision making.
