Great career opportunity with the US/Canada division of a highly respected Global Renewable Energy Company. Director Environmental Compliance is responsible for ensuring company’s compliance with all environmental regulations across the United States and Canada and reports to company General Counsel. Knowledge of Air Permitting Compliance in California, Michigan, and Pennsylvania desired. This role involves leading the development and implementation of compliance processes, managing regulatory relationships, and overseeing risk management programs. Selected individual will collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver timely regulatory approvals, provide strategic guidance to leadership, and foster a culture of environmental responsibility and safety. This full-time position requires a proactive leader with deep expertise in environmental compliance and the ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
· Develop, implement, and maintain processes, procedures, and systems to ensure compliance with federal, state, provincial, and local environmental regulations in the U.S. and Canada.
· Oversee the organization’s compliance risk management program, identifying, prioritizing, and mitigating legal and regulatory risks.
· Serve as the primary liaison with state EPAs, consultants, and regulatory agencies for compliance matters, audits, inspections, and Notices of Violation (NOV) responses.
· Manage the compliance calendar to ensure timely fulfillment of testing and reporting obligations.
· Collaborate with consultants to prepare, review, and submit accurate compliance reports.
· Partner with Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S), Engineering, and Project Delivery teams to secure regulatory approvals and drive timely project completion.
· Provide regular reports to management on compliance performance, risks, and recommended remedial actions.
· Conduct training for management and leadership on compliance requirements and risk management.
· Lead the Pipeline Safety Program in accordance with applicable regulations.
· Oversee air permitting activities and manage regulatory interfaces.
· Perform compliance audits to ensure adherence to protocols and manage reciprocating engine movements to comply with regulations.
· Conduct incident investigations, including Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Incident Cause Analysis Method (ICAM), for environmental and safety incidents or near misses.
· Manage budgets, identify cost-saving opportunities, and ensure financial targets are met.
· Provide compliance guidance to Renewable Natural Gas plants, particularly regarding permits and hazardous areas.
· Act as the Responsible Officer for regulatory agency interactions.
· Mentor and lead teams, fostering effective communication on compliance matters across the organization.
· Perform additional duties as assigned to support business objectives.
· Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE), or a related field.
· Minimum of 10 years’ experience in environmental compliance, preferably with multi-site organizations.
· Strong knowledge of current industrial compliance legislation, standards, codes, and practices in the U.S. and Canada.
· Experience in gas processing, power generation, utility industries or related is preferred.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel) for data recording, evaluation, and reporting.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders, including senior management.
· Proven leadership, mentoring, and training skills with a focus on team development.
· Strong organizational and time management skills, with a proactive and detail-oriented approach.
· Ability to thrive in a dynamic, rapidly changing environment and apply practical risk management solutions.
· Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel as needed to support compliance functions.
· Commitment to ongoing training and professional development to maintain compliance expertise, supported by company.
· Knowledge of industrial gases, process safety, or construction safety is a plus.
Competitive salary up to $200K/yr depending on qualifications. Individual & Company performance bonus up to 15%.
