Founded in 2002, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is a not-for-profit organization tasked with the safe, long-term management of Canada’s intermediate- and high-level radioactive waste, in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come.
The NWMO has been guided for more than 20 years by a dedicated team of world-class scientists, engineers and Indigenous Knowledge Holders who are developing innovative and collaborative solutions for nuclear waste management. In 2024, the NWMO selected Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation and the Township of Ignace as the hosts for the site for a deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel.
This decision means our office and staff will, in the future, be relocating to Ignace, Ont., and the deep geological repository will be situated in the area near Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation and the Township of Ignace. Infrastructure planning and development are underway to support this transition and ensure that both the community and our employees are well served and supported, now and in the future.
Employment Period: 16-Weeks Term from May 4, 2026 – August 27, 2026
Position Location: Ignace, Ontario - 304 Main Street
We are currently seeking an enthusiastic Developmental Student – Local Site Area Communications and Engagement to support community-facing communications and engagement activities at NWMO’s host community office in Ignace.
This role provides hands-on experience supporting Indigenous and regional communications, local engagement events, content development, in a fast-paced, community-focused environment. The student will work on-site in Ignace and receive mentorship from senior Engagement and Communications staff supporting the Deep Geological Repository project in the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation and Ignace area.
- Support preparation of communications materials for open houses, community events, school visits, and engagement sessions
- Assist with drafting, community updates, posters, and digital communications
- Support content gathering from Ignace-based staff and visiting specialists
- Support preparation of presentation decks and briefing materials for community-facing engagements
- Provide event logistics support during NWMO community events, including post-event summaries
The students will be given tasks based on business needs and their knowledge/skill level. Training and guidance will be provided to the student regarding the NWMO procedures and assigned tasks. To the extent time allows beyond the duties described above, the student may be assigned to support additional communication and engagement activities as needed. Occasional travel may be required. (NWMO covers required travel expenses)
- Currently enrolled in a post-secondary program, returning in the Fall, 2026
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail
- Professionalism when supporting public-facing materials and community events
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Teams
- Ability to work full-time on-site in Ignace for the duration of the placement
- Studies in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Media Studies, Marketing, Indigenous Studies, or a related field
- Familiarity with digital communications and basic content creation tools
- Interest in community engagement, Indigenous relations, or public affairs
- Experience supporting events, student media, campaigns, or community initiatives
Students must be returning full-time to their program at their university/College following the completion of their work term or be full-time students requiring the work term or co-op placement to graduate.
Students must be eligible to work in Canada and meet the security clearance requirements.
Students must be available to work full-time, 35 hours per week, 7 hours per day. At times, this position may require modified 7-hour workdays involving external events and activities.
