Midwest is a pipeline construction contractor based in Spruce Grove, AB and serves the Oil & Gas Industry in Western Canada. Construction projects are executed in all types of terrain and conditions, and vary in diameter, length and complexity. Midwest’s focus is on safety, quality, and relationships with employees, clients, and vendors.
Reporting to the CFO or President, the Corporate Controller will provide strategic leadership and hands-on management of the company’s accounting, financial reporting, and internal control functions. This individual will ensure compliance with accounting standards, support operational efficiency, and deliver timely, accurate financial information to support business decisions. As a key member of the senior finance team, the Controller will play a critical role in maintaining financial integrity and driving continuous improvement across the organization.

· Gain knowledge on pipeline construction industry and the company workflows to enhance cross-functional collaboration.
· Develop and maintain Subcontractor, and Vendor relationships.
· Prepare the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
· Ensure timely and accurate reporting of consolidated results for multiple entities, joint ventures, and project operations.
· Manage all external audits and liaise with auditors, banks, and regulatory bodies.
· Ensure compliance with tax regulations (corporate tax, GST, PST), corporate filings, and contractual obligations.
· Lead the day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and general ledger.
· Manage working capital, cash flow forecasting, and treasury operations.
· Partner with operations, estimating, and project management teams to prepare annual budgets and rolling forecasts.
· Monitor project cost controls and ensure alignment with corporate financial objectives.
· Ensure proper accounting treatment of complex transactions (e.g., long-term construction contracts, joint ventures, asset acquisitions).
· Evaluate and recommend improvements in financial systems, reporting tools, and processes.
· Provide leadership and mentoring to the accounting team, ensuring strong succession planning and professional development.
· Support the CFO and executive team with financial analysis, KPIs, and dashboards for strategic decision-making.
· Support insurance, bonding, and risk management activities.
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (MBA considered an asset).
· 10+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, with at least 5 years in a senior controller or equivalent role.
· Previous experience in construction, engineering, or Oil & Gas services strongly preferred.
· Demonstrated experience managing large, complex organizations ($200M+ revenue).
· Proficiency with ERP/accounting systems (experience with Explorer Eclipse is considered an asset).
· Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a focus on operational excellence.
