Position Scope

The Engineering Co-op Program within North American Construction Group (NACG) Estimating Department offers students meaningful exposure to the pre-construction phase of major heavy civil projects, including the development of estimates from a first-principles basis. Successful candidates will join NACG’s Estimating Department and contribute to all facets of estimate development, including but not limited to:

- Reviewing RFP packages and preparing executive summaries for management.

- Developing and issuing Requests for Quotation (RFQ) packages to subcontractors and suppliers; coordinating with them to ensure scope alignment and compliance with project requirements.

- Completing quantity take-offs from drawings and other client-provided documentation.

- Building and structuring estimate architecture within NACG’s estimating system.

- Gaining an understanding of heavy civil equipment capabilities and productivity, ranging from 30-tonne to 400-tonne units.

- Developing and inputting crew compositions and production rates for heavy civil earthworks scopes.

- Working closely with, and being mentored by, senior estimators and operational personnel.

- Preparing technical documentation such as construction execution plans.

- Assisting in the development of bid-level Primavera P6 schedules.

This position is based at our head office in Acheson, Alberta. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of senior estimating staff, in collaboration with operational teams involved in pre-construction activities. Responsibilities include the collection, interpretation, analysis, development, and reporting of estimating data, as well as regular interaction with internal stakeholders to ensure accurate and timely deliverables.

(8-12-month placements are available, but would consider a 4month term)

Location: Acheson, AB


Rate of Pay: $24.00-$31.00

Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8 hours per day with occasional overtime.


Tentative start date: May 2026

Responsibilities:


What You’ll Be Doing


As a Co-op, Project Coordinator, you will:


- Support the development of cost estimates within assigned functional disciplines.

- Contribute to the preparation of both conceptual and detailed estimates through interpretation of engineering documentation, specifications, and drawings, while applying construction methodology, risk assessment, and quantity take-off principles.

- Assist the preparation of a range of estimates in support of proposals, including defining the estimating scope of work, establishing methodology and basis of estimate, and developing the overall estimate schedule outlining key deliverables and interdisciplinary interfaces.

- Ensure estimates align with established quality and accuracy standards, including equipment and material pricing guidelines, material take-off allowances, and site labour productivity factors.

- Complete detailed material take-offs and obtain facilitate pricing from subcontractors and suppliers.


Qualifications:

- Prior estimating experience is not required; however, previous field experience or exposure on an active construction site is considered an asset.

- Currently enrolled in a post-secondary program (University or Technical College) in mining, civil, or construction-related disciplines.

- Heavy Civil experience an asset

- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.

- Demonstrated willingness to learn and adapt.

- Valid class 5 license.
