We are seeking an Entry-level Energy Engineer (Energy Efficiency Program Evaluation) to join our rapidly growing team in New Jersey. The successful candidate will be located in New Jersey, or willing to relocate there within six months.

We are looking for a technically skilled, self-motivated individual who shares our passion for energy efficiency and decarbonization. As an Entry-level Energy Engineer, you will be a key technical and field resource as part of our consulting team, assessing the impact of energy efficiency programs, conducting on-site visits at commercial and industrial facilities, interviewing customers on their facility operations and projects, installing energy logging equipment to collect electrical and operational data, and utilizing collected data to develop energy savings estimates for energy efficiency projects.

It is a remote position (work-from-home) with travel requirements to customer sites, primarily within the mid-Atlantic region (NJ, PA, occasionally MD) with up to 50% travel.
- Perform walk-through (on-site) and virtual inspections of commercial and industrial facilities – as part of evaluations, surveys, and research studies – for the purposes of:
- Verifying the installation of energy efficient equipment or systems
- Collecting and documenting information and data
- Interviewing facility owners and managers about the operation of equipment
- Deploy temporary data logging and metering equipment
- Perform energy and peak demand savings calculations for various energy efficiency measures, using standard and custom engineering tools, formulas, and methodologies, primarily within Microsoft Excel
- Maintain and be responsible for complete and reliable records of data, notes, findings, and photos from site inspections and analyses.
- Coordinate regularly with internal engineering staff, field work coordinators, internal project managers, and other external parties
- Review and understand technical documentation associated with energy efficiency projects – application forms, invoices, specification sheets, spreadsheet calculations, engineering inputs and algorithms, etc.
- Follow project-specific measurement and verification (M&V) plans, detailing on-site objectives, data collection requirements, facility contact interview questions, and photos to be collected.
- Analyze utility data and collected on-site data utilizing Excel or other software to identify trends, summarize data, and inform engineering inputs and algorithms to calculate energy savings.
- Calculate energy savings with technical reference manual (TRM) algorithms, temperature bin analysis, lighting calculators, eQUEST modeling and other tools.
- Work independently or with supervision to participate in research efforts, ensuring consistency and quality of research methods.
- Conduct secondary research using published studies, program tracking data, evaluation reports, and Technical Reference Manuals (TRMs).
- Formulate findings and recommendations based on research efforts.
- Document findings visually and/or verbally for memos and reports to clients and/or internal project teams.
- Support senior staff with development of presentations, papers and proposals.
- Must be able to handle a wide work variety and work in a fast-paced environment
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical, energy or electrical engineering and related disciplines such as energy systems, environmental and public policy. An Associate degree plus relevant experience will also be considered.
- 1-3 years of professional experience working with Demand Side Management (DSM) Consultancies, Energy Service Companies (ESCO), Design Build firms, Engineering firms, lighting, HVAC and/or field technician.
- General understanding of common commercial building systems (lighting, electrical, HVAC, water, envelope, etc.), building automation systems (BAS), and controls.
- Strong mathematical skills and competency with spreadsheet-based analysis.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong oral presentation skills
- Ability to articulate ideas within a virtual working environment
- Demonstrated good working knowledge of MS Office tools - i.e., Excel, Word - and databases.
- Must-be a detail oriented, well-organized, self-starter, with an ability to prioritize workloads.
- Ability to adapt to a situation and still achieve on-site objectives.
- Proficient in English
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, and drive a car.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
- A U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident.
- Relevant AEE certifications – PE, CEM, CMVP, CBCP – are a plus
- Energy auditing and/or retro-commissioning experience is a plus.
- Experience/expertise with relevant software tools such as eQUEST, RETScreen, Trane TRACE, Energy Plus, PV Watts, etc.
- Experience with deploying energy loggers on equipment (light loggers, power metering, temperature loggers, etc.), how to connect and disconnect them, and how to read data from appropriate software.
- Experience with building energy modeling, energy use billing analysis, and energy savings calculation algorithms
- Demonstrated experience with field-based activities
