Rainy River Mine

Situated in beautiful northwestern Ontario, 65 km northwest of Fort Frances, the Rainy River Mine is an open pit and underground, gold and silver producing, residential mine site.


The Rainy River Mine, located adjacent to the Ontario / Minnesota border is 65 Kilometers northwest of Fort Frances, Ontario and is situated half way between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario. The area is home to more than 130 species of birds and large populations of moose, black bear and deer. About The Role


Schedule: 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off – 12 hours / day

Position Overview


The Civil Engineering Co-Op Student position offers an exciting opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in a mining construction environment, with learning and growth opportunities in the areas of tailings dam construction, monitoring, and governance, mine reclamation and closure, and mining infrastructure project management. The opportunity is available on a fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) rotation for an either 4-month or 8-month term beginning in Spring 2026.


As a member of the New Gold Capital Projects Department, the Civil Engineering Co-Op Student is expected to live by and role model the New Gold I. The Civil Engineering Co-Op Student will report to the Capital Projects Superintendent or Supervisor who will direct work assignments in field and office in the general discipline areas of tailings dam construction and monitoring, mining civil earthworks, mine reclamation, project coordination, and construction survey. The Civil Engineering Co-Op Student will work from the Marr Site Construction Office in a multi-disciplinary open office team environment.


Field and office assignments will include tailings dam inspection, collection of instrumentation geotechnical data (including piezometers, settlement plates, and slope inclinometers), construction survey layout and as-built pick-up, construction project estimating, scheduling, coordination, quality control inspection, progress measurement, reporting, and administration as well as other duties as assigned. Tasks and assignments will be varied for student exposure across Capital Projects and the Rainy River Mine site including exposure to other business areas. Field work may occur in all weather conditions.



Duties and Responsibilities


- Demonstrate strong commitment and adherence to all Health & Safety Policies and Procedures.

- Demonstrate strong commitment and adherence to all Code of Conduct Policies.

- Demonstrate a positive attitude with enthusiasm and eagerness to learn cross-functional department areas.

- Work alongside the Construction Coordinator in the planning and delivery of site civil earthworks projects.

- Work collaboratively with a variety of industry professionals across construction and technical disciplines.

- Conduct tailings dam inspections with the Tailings Dam Technician or Engineer.

- Conduct regular data collection from piezometers, settlement plates, slope inclinometers, water level readings, and other survey and GPS field work readings, inputting and administering data, and reporting.

- Conduct construction survey layout and as-built survey data collection.

- Assist in construction project estimating, scheduling, coordination, quality control, and progress reporting.

- Assist in the management and coordination of site contractors and consultants as required.

- Assist in department administration and reporting as required.



Qualifications


- Currently enrolled in a Canadian-accredited undergraduate engineering program and returning to studies.

- Civil or Mining Engineering programs are preferred but are not required for consideration.

- Consistently demonstrate a positive attitude contributing to a high-performance workplace culture.

- Exceptional interpersonal skills, a team player across a multi-disciplinary dynamic team environment.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills across communication mediums.

- Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills across projects, priorities, and disciplines.

- Proficiency in computer-based software (Microsoft Suite, Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and others).

- Ability to work a fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) rotation in an active mining and camp environment.

- Ability to change and re-prioritize tasks as new information is gathered or plans and priorities change.

- Ability to self-motivate and work independently or collaborate within multi-disciplinary groups.

- Previous experience in construction or mining environments with heavy equipment is considered advantageous.

- Previous experience in construction trades or labour environments is considered advantageous.
