This is a term position which may be for a period of up to 24 months, offers a competitive compensation package and is located on-site in Tiverton, Ontario.
The Certified Occupational Health Nurse will report to the Section Manager, Wellness and Benefits Management and will:
•Participate in all aspects of disability management to ensure employees’ safe and timely return to work after injury or illness.
•Provide advice, guidance, and assistance to management and employees in health-related matters.
•Coordinate, develop and implement wellness and health education programs.
•Refer employees to appropriate community agencies and services.
Key Responsibilities:
•Liase with vendor partner in relation to disability management and return-to-work process ensuring information flow between responsible parties.
•Facilitate a safe and effective return to work for employees.
•Identify employee medical limitations and make recommendations to management on how to accommodate the employee in the workplace.
•Arrange appropriate referrals for medical assessments and interventions to assist an employee’s recovery and treatment.
•Monitor and attempt to ensure compliance to medical advice obtained from the physician and within the nursing guidelines.
•Provide on-site nursing and sanctioned medical care to assist employee to remain at work.
•Coordinate, develop and implement wellness and health education programs such as: back care, hearing conservation and health promotion activities to meet the needs of employee groups.
•Implement as necessary, immunization programs in accordance with specified company and government regulations.
•Administer allergy medications under the direction of a qualified medical practitioner.
•Maintain confidential nursing records in accordance with standard procedures of professional practice.
•Secure occupational health units to protect information, drugs and equipment.
•Purchase supplies and equipment for occupational health units as required.
•In cooperation with the Emergency Response Personnel and/or Security, provide emergency nursing care for any medical problems which are present at the health centre or for which the Certified Occupational Health Nurse is requested to assist with on site, including utilizing the automatic external defibrillator (AED).
•Act as a resource for joint health and safety committees.
•Perform, on request, assessments of Confidential Health Statements for employment applicant.
•Complete Duty Disposition Letter for employees returning to work following major illness or injury.
•Perform nursing assessments and provide guidance on medically related problems that evolve between Employee, Union, management, e.g. alcoholism, substance abuse.
•Assess and identify physician services and community resources in vicinity of the employee’s residence to address their specific health problems.
•Assist with the medical clinic as required.
•Assist physicians with pre-employment, periodic and special examinations and/or in carrying out treatment as required.
•Perform health assessment duties, e.g. audiometric testing, crane medicals, respirator medical, asbestos, etc.
•Perform and interpret various tests required for health assessment purposes and assess the need for referral. Track results of testing and identify potential local and individual health issues.
•Recommend resources to line management to resolve any health hazards identified. May perform other tests, such as, fat measurement, stress tests, fitness evaluation tests and biological sample tests.
•Provide orientation and guidance for relief staff and students.
•Perform other duties as required.
Education and Experience:
•Requires knowledge of anatomy, physiology, mathematics, health assessment, and health surveillance.
•Requires knowledge of emergency nursing care, health and safety promotion, and the principles and practices of industrial hygiene, toxicology, accident prevention and ergonomics.
•Requires knowledge of English in terms of good oral and written communication skills to converse effectively with others.
•This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired through the completion of a 4-year University degree.
•Requires experience in the management of health-related matters, such as job placement, work modification, and the promotion of a healthy and safe work environment.
•Requires experience to work as part of a team established to facilitate return to work for employees.
•Requires experience to be familiar with the process of referring employees to appropriate agencies and for the nursing care and transportation of ill and injured workers.
•Requires experience to coordinate, develop and implement wellness and health education programs.
•Must be a Registered Nurse in good standing with the Ontario College of Nurses.
•Must be Certified by the Canadian Nurses Association as a Certified Occupational Health Nurse.
•A period of over 6 years of relevant experience and up to and including 8 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
