Analytics is key to understanding and predicting system performance. SERC's Analytics and Data Management program provides a platform for data and information to be translated into insights. With a mix of analytics, visualization, and modeling techniques, the Business Intelligence Intern supports the analytics team by assisting with data analysis and visualization efforts to help other departments, managers, and executives better understand data and analytical outputs within the organization. The Intern also supports the preparation of data and analyses that help stakeholders improve their understanding of risks, performance and contribute to the reliability and security of the Bulk Power System
The Intern is developing foundational skills in data management, analytical techniques, and metrics. They learn to combine technical skills like programming, data modeling, and statistics with soft skills like communication, analytical thinking and problem-solving. Using these skills the intern will work with diverse datasets under supervision and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to help generate actionable business insights and solutions.
- Assist in reviewing and analyzing nuanced data to identify trends and patterns in data and support senior staff in identifying opportunities for improvement, optimization, or value opportunities.
- Support the collection, cleaning, and analysis of data from various sources using Excel and SQL with exposure to python as appropriate.
- Assist with combining data from multiple sources and document data relationships (data modeling).
- Conduct supervised ad-hoc data analysis to support business decisions and strategic planning.
- Prepare draft summaries, visualization, or presentation materials to communicate data insights to leadership and other stakeholders under guidance from the analytics team.
- Learn and follow established policies, procedures, and processes for the collection and analysis of data.
- Support data submittal activities through SERC and NERC systems, including data validation and documentation.
- Participate as a learning member of a team of subject matter experts providing supporting department and organizational goals.
- Perform other related duties consistent with an intern role, as directed.
- Currently pursuing or recently completed BS, BA, or AA in Information Management, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Economics, Statistics, Business Intelligence or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and training.
- Interest in the energy of utility sector preferred; industry experience not required.

- Awareness of Business Intelligence tools and systems (i.e., PowerBI, Tableau, SAS) through coursework or projects is a plus.
- Basic to intermediate experience or coursework exposure in tools such as Python, Microsoft SQL Server, and Excel (advanced features encouraged but not required).
- Develop hands-on experience working with real-world, messy data.
- Build foundational skills in data modeling and entity relationship design, including the creation and maintenance of dimension tables used for analytics and dashboards.
- Develop skills in data analysis, visualization, and summarization to support internal stakeholders and decision-making.
- Gain exposure to data governance practices, including documentation, data standards, and processes for maintaining analytical assets over time.
- Learn techniques for transforming unstructured data into structured datasets, including exposure to machine learning and natural language processing concepts.
This is a paid internship starting at $20 per hour, 40 hours per week for up to 12 weeks (5/18/26 - 8/7/26).
This internship is located in Charlotte, NC with a minimum of 3 days per week expected in the office.
