JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Asset & Resource Optimization Analyst based in downtown Toronto.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, the Asset & Resource Optimization Analysts will be OPG’s go-to experts for all transmission and generation related matters in the Ontario energy market.

Responsibilities will include enhancing the commercial value of OPG's fleet resources in the market through outage optimization, short and long-term fleet generation forecasting to be used for budgeting, business planning and long-term generation planning, and performing strategic analysis in support of negotiations with other market participants, regulators, and policy makers.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

- Stakeholder Interaction: Engage with various stakeholders including internal OPG workgroups, the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), Hydro One, and other external parties/agencies as required.

- Integrated Outage Planning: Continuously review Hydro One’s outage program and IESO outage-related Operating Security limits to identify impacts on OPG operations and opportunities for coordination. Negotiate revisions and support OPG Operations in interfacing with Hydro One/IESO.

- Generation Scheduling: Work with OPG’s broader Energy Markets team to produce integrated generation schedules for the next day using Day-Ahead business processes. Provide analysis for day-ahead strategies and post-analysis of implemented plans.

- Market Analysis: Support or perform after-the-fact analysis of OPG's activities in the IESO and surrounding wholesale energy day-ahead and real-time markets.

- Strategic and Operational Planning: Assist in strategic analysis and long-term operational plans for optimizing OPG’s resources. Analyze and gather market intelligence, participate in strategy sessions, and assist with interpreting trends.

QUALIFICATIONS

- 4-year university degree in Engineering, or an equivalent level of education.

- A period of 4-6 years of relevant work experience is required for this role.

- Requires practical experience to become familiar with the operation of the integrated Bulk Electricity System (BES) in addition to fundamental impacts on market price and volatility and a good understanding of physical and financial energy markets, including an understanding of OPG's market footprint.

- Proficient in programming and business software, with expertise in modelling and forecasting.

- Proficient understanding of power system limits and familiarity with the operation of the integrated Bulk Electricity System (BES).

- Requires experience in a commercial environment, including intelligence gathering and negotiation activities.

- Requires experience to acquire knowledge in outage management co-ordination, transmission analysis, generation scheduling and financial risk management.

- Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to develop relationships and work with internal stakeholders in various functions and at all levels

The successful candidate will exhibit uncompromising integrity and commitment to upholding corporate values, and the OPG Code of Business Conduct.

OPG is committed to fostering an inclusive, equitable, and accessible environment. If you require accommodation during the selection process, please contact AODA@opg.com

What makes a career at OPG different?

With operations across Ontario and the United States, OPG is one of the most diverse power producers in North America. As the largest generator in Ontario, we meet approximately 50% of the province’s electricity needs, largely from low-carbon sources like nuclear and hydro.

As we work to achieve our vision of Electrifying life in one generation, OPG and our family of companies are also helping advance the development of new low-carbon technologies such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), refurbishment projects, and electrification initiatives to help power the growing demands of a growing economy.
