The Yard Foreman oversees all yard personnel and activities, including serving customers in the yard and maintaining receiving, unloading, and delivery schedules. They must execute on the operating budget and supervise compliance with safety and fire regulations. The Supervisor is accountable for all materials and equipment in the yard. The Yard Supervisor must perform all assigned tasks with sufficient speed and accuracy to support store efficiency and a high level of customer service.
- Assist and communicate with customers, management, employees, wholesaler / manufacturer representatives, and delivery personnel.
- Move throughout the yard to monitor the activities of employees, assist customers, check inventory status, and verify the safety and security of the yard.
- Assume responsibilities for all yard activities.
- Supervise yard personnel, keeping productivity at peak levels.
- Supervise customer service in the yard.
- Develop and maintain receiving, unloading, and delivery schedules.
- Supervise the maintenance and safe operation of yard equipment, including forklifts, carts, pallet jack, radial arm saw, etc.
- Keep costs at or below levels determined by the Manager or Dealer-Owner.
- Report out-of-stock items and surplus items to the appropriate personnel.
- Oversee the work schedules of all full-time and part-time employees assigned to the yard.
- Supervise compliance with safety and fire regulations.
- Establish and maintain policies which minimize waste and employ labour hours productively.
- Bring actual or anticipated operating problems promptly to the attention of management.
- Make suggestions for rule or policy changes when such changes would improve sales, profits, efficiency, morale, and/or operations in general.
- Provide a good example for employees under your supervision by following company policies and procedures.
- Acknowledge customers in a friendly manner and provide assistance when required.
- When filling orders, consider add-on sales when possible, and train employees under your supervision to do the same.
- Work on additional duties and assignments as assigned by management.
- Work in a safe manner in accordance with provincial and federal safety legislation. Report any potential hazards and unsafe behavior to management in order to have the situation corrected.
- High School graduation or equivalent.
- 1 - 2 years of retail experience is an asset.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
- Must be able to move materials weighing up to 100 pounds around the yard, placing them on or removing them from trucks, pallets, etc.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
- The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and climb or balance.

- The employee is exposed to outside weather conditions such as high winds, rain, snow, ice, sleet.
- The employee is exposed to uneven surfaces in the yard, mud, dirt, icy surfaces.
- The employee is required to get in and out of forklift, climb up ladders, operate pallet jack, lumber cart, banding machine, radial arm saw etc.
Reports directly to the Assistant Manager or Store Manager.
