WASTEWATER COLLECTION TECHNICIAN TRAINEE

Candidates must be available to work 11 am - 7 pm shift, as well as on call, after hours, and during weather events, and any overtime when needed.

Job Summary

Work may be performed under direct supervision of a higher-level Wastewater Collection Technician. This is an entry-level classification in which incumbents learn the skills required to perform semi-skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater collection systems. Performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater collection systems.Â

Level I Technicians are required to complete additional training classes within a 24-month time period.Â

Essential Job Functions

Assists with the construction, repair, and maintenance of manholes.

Digs ditches and unloads pipe.

Assists with the elimination of sewer blockages.

Obtains proper tools, equipment, supplies, and materials for Senior Technicians.

Locates sewer mains, manholes, and laterals.

Drives and/or operates dump truck, knuckle-boom truck, sewer vacuum truck, and hydra-jet.

Assists with operation of combo vac/jet truck to clean sewer mains and remove blockages.

Operates TV video equipment with NASSCO format and related equipment.

Assists with operation of closed circuit television (CCTV) inspection in accordance with NASCO standards.

Cleans sewer spills and applies proper biocides as needed.

Responds to emergency calls related to any Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO), back-up and manhole issue.

All other duties as assigned.

Additional Duties Required Upon In-grade Progression

Operates a variety of complex trucks and equipment to properly maintain the collection system in order to comply with Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) mandates and ECUA Standard Operating Procedures/Guidelines for Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) reporting.

Uses computer for work orders, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) mapping, and to look up customer information.Â

Operates manhole rehabilitation truck, by-pass systems, back-hoe, front-end loader and related maintenance equipment.

Reviews and archives CCTV video from inspections. Provides video to internal and external customers upon request.

Performs daily inspections of the sewer collection system using CCTV camera equipment and visually inspecting manholes.

Assists with evaluation of pipes, manholes, and laterals using National Association of Sewer Service Companies (NASSCO) coding procedures.

Uses techniques and equipment to evaluate the collection system for sources of Infiltration and Inflow (I & I), such as smoke and dye testing.Â

Sets up and operates temporary by-passes of gravity sewer system.

Performs daily grease, sand, roots and debris removal from the collection system.

Uses knowledge of system to clear blockages though out the collection system.

Maintains reports for division manager on infiltration/inflow found during inspections.

Assist contractors and other divisions as needed with Vac-trucks and CCTV camera trucks.

Supervise and train new employees.

Required to work different shifts as needed in all kinds of weather events.

High school diploma or equivalent. (Educational documentation will be required upon offer of employment.)

One (1) year of experience performing utility maintenance work and computer skills.

Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Basic level of experience in the use of computers.

Must respond to all emergency work call-outs beyond his or her assigned shift.

Licenses and Certifications

Possession of a valid driver's license.

Completion of all required ECUA training modules.

The incumbent's working conditions are typically moderately quiet, but may be loud for limited durations while working with power tools, equipment, or machinery following all prescribed safety rules and regulations.
