Job Summary

This entry level, trainee position requires no experience.

Using prescribed methods and procedures, performs specific and limited portions of a broader assignment of an experienced radiological chemist.

Works under close supervision; receives specific and detailed instructions as to required tasks and expected results.

Performs a variety of tasks, which should provide experience and familiarization with nuclear plant chemistry staff activities.

May perform limited chemical analysis, routine surveillances and inspections.

May maintain records and various types of instrumentation and equipment.

Other duties related to the department’s assigned responsibilities may be required to be performed as assigned by supervisor.

Skills and Proficiencies (May be job or organization specific)

Proficiency in safe laboratory practices; Proficiency chemistry lab ware application and use; Proficiency in the math skills to perform and understand equations and calculations used in a radio analytical lab; Basic computer skills; Principles of chemical reactions.


Minimum Qualifications (Consistent with Classification Standard)

Education and Experience/Certificates, Licenses, and Registration Requirements/Other Requirements

Program participants shall have at least an associate degree, or equivalent, acquired from an accredited college/university, military, vocational school or others. This degree shall include satisfactory completion (grade of C or better) of college courses in both mathematics and chemistry. Successful completion of the Naval Engineering Laboratory Technician Training Program is considered equivalent to second-year college-level training. An official college or university transcript or certificate of completion is required.

Must be able to obtain and maintain unescorted nuclear plant access and S-3 and S-4 medical qualifications when applicable. Must be able and willing to assume “on-call” rotational assignments which may include 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a-week availability. Must be willing and medically able to work rotating shifts and maximum overtime permitted by NPG procedures during peak periods. Must be able and willing to travel to plant locations as required when performing assigned tasks and, as necessary, to be temporarily assigned to a field location. Requires use of protective clothing and work in areas with elevated temperatures, high noise backgrounds, asbestos, radiation and other industrial hazards.
