JOB DESCRIPTION
Are you passionate about Engineering and want to put your technical and leadership skills to work in a world-class mining operation? If so, we are currently looking for a qualified surface water management engineer to join our Horizon Project in the Mine Technical Services team.
In this role, you would be given the opportunity to showcase your proficiency by supporting the development, optimization, communication and execution of water management systems supporting our long range mine plans. Through collaboration with Horizon’s other levels of mine and tailings planning groups, Mine Operations, Environment & Regulatory in addition to external stakeholders and provincial regulators, you will have the opportunity to significantly increase the business value of the Horizon Project.

Key Accountabilities
•Responsible for the preparation of conceptual, preliminary and detailed designs of surface water management projects, and providing guidance and direction in the execution of such projects
•Conduct hydraulic modelling as required to support design assumptions for watershed alterations, stream diversions, water collection and distribution systems and related infrastructure
•Participate in the development of risk-based strategies to handle surface water flows that ensure uninterrupted and safe mining operations from the near term through to the end of project life, many decades into the future
•Ensure that designs meet all regulatory and permit license requirements while reflecting appropriate public stakeholder concerns
•Lead or support the preparation of technical proposals, reports, design specifications, stakeholder presentations, project budget and schedules, regulatory applications and regulatory submissions including the annual surface water management plan and annual mine plan
•Provide technical review, authentication, and validation of professional work products within area of responsibility to ensure Mine Technical Services standards are being implemented and upheld as per Canadian Natural and APEGA’s Professional Practice Management Plan
•Impart knowledge through mentorship of colleagues and championing the technical and business merits of water management projects to company senior management
•Manage performance of consultants who may be hired to provide additional support
What You Bring To The Role
•Undergraduate degree in civil, geotechnical or environmental engineering with an emphasis on surface water flow management
•10+ years of relevant consulting or industry experience
•Registered with APEGA, or eligible to register
•Strong technical writing, documentation and communication skills combined with a demonstrated ability to deliver results on time and on budget; ability to find consensus-based solutions to technical challenges through innovative and analytic thinking
•Capacity to thrive in a fast-paced environment where relationship-building, trust and political acumen is crucial
•Sufficient knowledge of water management structures and technology used in erosion control, culverting, open and closed channel water conveyance, pumping systems, drainage infrastructure, water containment, flow abatement, habitat protection, water quality protection and flood protection
•Previous experience in an oilsands setting and relevant post-graduate certification would be considered an asset
