Substation Electrical Engineer

Gridwise Engineering is a small but growing power engineering consultancy, located in Metrotown, Burnaby, BC delivering engineering services to power utility and industrial clients in Canada.

We are currently looking for an Intermediate Electrical Engineer focusing on substation electrical design. If you are self-driven and have a keen interest in electrical power systems and substation electrical design, this is the opportunity for you. This role offers early exposure in a growing power engineering consultancy, with exciting opportunities and large growth potential as the company expands. You will work across a range of utility and industrial projects, gaining incredible experience and developing strong technical skills.

Job Requirements:

- You will lead substation electrical work packages on projects in the power utility, mining, industrial and renewables sectors

- You will prepare electrical design deliverables for 12kV to 230kV substations/ switching stations, including substation layout and cross-section design, equipment selection and specification, grounding and lightning shielding system design, control building/ E-house design, station services and switchyard lighting design, etc.

- You will perform electrical studies and calculations such as grounding studies, AC/ DC station services load and battery sizing calculations, rigid bus and lightning protection calculations, etc.

- You will review work done by other electrical engineers in the team including designers

- You will supervise, mentor, direct work to junior engineers, EITs and designers

- You will lead electrical design discussions with clients and other project stakeholders

- You will interface and coordinate electrical design with other related disciplines such as civil, structural, P&C and telecom

- You will provide technical support and perform Engineer-of-Record duties during construction and commissioning

- You will get the opportunity to travel to project sites during design and construction phases

- You will provide support on business development activities such as preparing proposals, design estimates, presentations at customers offices, industry events, etc.

Required Qualifications:

- Electrical Engineering Degree from a recognized university along with a P.Eng. designation

- 6-8 years of relevant engineering work experience will be preferred.

- Applicants with lesser but relevant work experience who have passion for substation electrical design may be considered for an Electrical Engineer role.

- Proficiency in using ETAP, WinIGS, CDEGS, EasyPower, etc. for engineering studies will be considered favourably

- Proficiency in using AutoCAD will be considered favourably

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

- A valid BC class 5 drivers license

- Ability to work in a team environment and on their own initiative as required
