The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is recruiting a Summer Student to join the talented team in Field Operations West, within the Regulatory Compliance Branch.
This student role will involve field verification of environmental requirements, specifically related to public lands, wildlife, and the Water Act. To uphold the AER’s mandate of environmental protection, this student position will be part of a focused inspection initiative designed to supplement the work of existing inspectors and provide compliance data to the Field Operations West team.
- Assess compliance with the Public Lands Act, Water Act, EPEA, and other relevant legislation under AER jurisdiction.
- Verify construction practices and the maintenance of roads, leases, water diversion activities, watercourse crossings, and associated infrastructure.
- Accurately document findings and complete data entry.
- Make informed decisions on environmental performance that may not be clearly evident and require deductive reasoning.
- Coordinate with Field Inspectors and Senior Inspectors to ensure consistency in field interpretations.
- Analyze provincial data related to specific environmental requirements.
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program in Environmental Science or a related field.
- Experience or knowledge in fisheries, oilfield construction, forestry, or soil sciences is considered an asset.
- Ability to read and interpret legislation and approvals.
- Strong work ethic with excellent attention to detail.
- Passion for the environment and the protection of Alberta’s natural resources.
- Proof of enrollment in a registered post-secondary institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term, or enrollment in a registered co-op program will be a condition of hire.

- A pre-placement medical and a fully valid Class 5 driver’s license, along with a positive driving record, are required due to the field component of this role. Applicants must be willing to complete First Aid, ATV Safety, Driver Training, and H2S Alive training (provided as part of duties).
- Must be able to confidently operate ATVs in remote locations.
- This role involves approximately 70% field work; therefore, travel within Alberta and occasional overnight trips will be required.
