Student, GIS Developer – Hybrid The Opportunity
The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking a Summer Student to join our dynamic Information Management and Technology (IMT) Branch. As part of the IMT team, you will contribute to managing the full lifecycle of the technology and information systems essential to the AER’s operations. Our branch oversees all aspects of Information Technology and Information Management, ensuring that the tools and processes supporting the organization remain innovative, reliable, and effective.
We are looking for a skilled GIS Specialist to join our team. This position is ideal for candidates nearing completion of a Bachelor of Applied Technology in Geographic Information Systems or a Computer Science program, with a strong desire to apply those skills within a GIS team. This is an excellent opportunity to apply your education to meaningful work while continuing to develop hands-on experience and building GIS solutions that support the AER’s mandate to ensure the efficient, safe, orderly, and environmentally responsible development of Alberta’s energy and mineral resources.
What your day-to-day will look like:
- Assist in the development and implementation of GIS-based solutions for various projects.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate GIS data into operational processes.
- Apply critical thinking and problem-solving strategies to address diverse GIS challenges.
- Create detailed maps to analyze geographic patterns that support AER business processes.
- Work with relational database management systems and GIS software applications to solve complex spatial problems.
- Currently enrolled in the third year or higher of a Bachelor’s program in Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or a related field.
- Hands-on experience with GIS software and familiarity with programming languages such as Python, R, JavaScript, C#, or SQL is an asset.
- Relevant educational experience with GIS concepts and spatial data analysis is preferred.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Proof of enrollment in a registered post-secondary institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term, or enrollment in a registered co-op program will be a condition of hire.
