Student, Geographic Information Systems – Hybrid The Opportunity
The Alberta Geological Survey (AGS), a branch of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), is seeking summer students to join the Geoscience Innovation team—a multidisciplinary group of geoscientists and geospatial data experts who combine technical expertise, creativity, and a forward-looking mindset to reveal and communicate insights about Alberta’s subsurface that are critical to the province’s energy and mineral future.
As a Student in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), you will use both standard and innovative techniques to help the team optimize map digitization workflows and modernize AGS’ legacy mapping products, creating valuable geospatial resources for both internal and external use. Your primary focus will be digitizing AGS’ geological maps of the Canadian Shield in northeastern Alberta, working closely with mineral resource geologists who will provide domain expertise to support your work.
The map sheets you will work on are essential for exploring critical minerals and other mineral resources. We are looking for a student with strong GIS and data science skills, a creative and innovative approach, and the ability to leverage modern tools to improve digitization workflows.
What your day-to-day will look like:
- Develop a thorough understanding of relevant historic geological maps, including the various layers and their geological significance. This may involve reviewing historic geological reports to ensure a comprehensive grasp of map features.
- Review AGS’ existing automation-assisted digitization workflows, research digitization methods in the context of historic geological maps, and provide initial recommendations for workflows that optimize both precision and efficiency.
- Implement the digitization workflow on historic geological maps, ensuring robust topology, consistent accuracy, and retention of all geological information.
- Iteratively refine digitization efforts for each map sheet to improve efficiency while maintaining high standards of accuracy.
- Collaborate with mineral resource geologists to implement edits to digital geological maps based on modern field data and interpretations. This includes updating existing features, merging adjacent map sheets, and correcting topology errors.
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s program in Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or a related field.
- Proficiency in ArcGIS for digitization workflows, data management, and cartographic production.
- Demonstrated capability in implementing automated processes and AI-driven solutions within GIS environments.
- Academic or professional experience in geological concepts and data is preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, with the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
- Proof of enrollment in a registered post-secondary institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term, or enrollment in a registered co-op program will be a condition of hire.
- Please include a cover letter / portfolio as part of your application.
- All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
- Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.
- If you need accommodation during any stage of the recruitment process, please email PeopleServices@aer.ca. Information relating to the need for accommodation and accommodation measures will be addressed confidentially.
- Flexible Work Program - hybrid work and flexible hours.
- Hybrid work – employees may work remotely up to five days per calendar month, with a limit of two remote days per week.
- Student Cohort Groups - Join vibrant student cohorts for networking, collaboration, and support.
- Engagement Activities - Participate in workshops, seminars, and social events to enhance your skills and personal growth.
- Mentorship and Networking - Gain insights from experienced professionals and build meaningful relationships.
- Skill Development - Hone your skills and contribute to meaningful projects.
