The Structural Facility Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing fabrication equipment, mobile equipment, and facility systems within a structural steel fabrication environment. This role ensures optimal equipment performance, minimizes downtime, and supports safe, high-volume production operations.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair structural steel fabrication equipment including beam lines, drill lines, saws, plasma/oxy-fuel tables, and robotic welding systems.
- Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues on production machinery.
- Perform both scheduled and emergency repairs to minimize production downtime.
- Troubleshoot CNC and automated fabrication systems.
- Work closely with operators and supervisors to resolve equipment-related production issues quickly.
- Ensure systems operate efficiently to maintain throughput and quality standards.
- Inspect, repair, and calibrate welding machines (MIG, FCAW, Stick).
- Diagnose wire feed issues, electrical faults, grounding problems, and arc performance.
- Maintain welding accessories including leads, feeders, and gas delivery systems.
- Service and repair forklifts, overhead cranes, yard equipment, trucks, and trailers.
- Perform engine diagnostics, brake repairs, and hydraulic system maintenance.
- Maintain diesel-powered equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation.
- Diagnose and repair hydraulic components including hoses, cylinders, pumps, seals, and valves.
- Troubleshoot mechanical failures such as bearings, gearboxes, rollers, and drive systems.
- Ensure all mechanical systems are functioning safely and efficiently.
- Execute and support preventive maintenance (PM) schedules across all equipment and systems.
- Perform routine inspections to identify and prevent potential failures.
- Coordinate maintenance activities with production to minimize disruption.
- Support facility systems including electrical, plumbing, and HVAC as needed.
- Assist in maintaining overall plant infrastructure and operational readiness.
- Assist with installation, setup, and commissioning of new equipment.
- Perform minor fabrication and welding repairs on equipment and shop fixtures.
- Follow OSHA regulations and company safety policies at all times.
- Perform lockout/tagout procedures during maintenance activities.
- Ensure all equipment is safe and operational before returning to service.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance, repairs, and inspections.
- Track parts usage and maintain inventory of critical spare components.
- Coordinate with vendors and suppliers for parts and service support.
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests to support production goals.
- Collaborate with operations, supervisors, and other departments.
- Train or assist other maintenance personnel when needed.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Use hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment effectively.
- Work flexible schedules, including overtime or weekends, as required.
Work in a structural steel fabrication shop with exposure to noise, dust, heat, and heavy equipment.
- Ability to lift 50–65 lbs and perform physical tasks such as standing, bending, kneeling, and reaching.
- Must wear required PPE including safety glasses, gloves, steel-toe boots, and hearing protection.
