The Sr. Watershed Technician performs skilled work related to the general maintenance of the Patuxent Watershed. This position monitors the construction, alteration, maintenance, and repair of WSSC Water facilities, and ensures equipment is properly monitored for necessary repairs and replacements. Work involves skilled tasks across multiple building and mechanical trades, performed below full performance level, with supervision of subordinate staff.
- Performs carpentry work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of buildings and components such as watershed signs, fences and gates
- Adjusts and repairs to locks, doors, hinges and other hardware
- Troubleshoots and repairs a variety plumbing fixtures and equipment
- Monitors repairs to electrical fixtures and reports on malfunctions
- Mixes and applies paint to various surfaces using brushes, rollers and spray guns
- Performs cement assignments
- Inspects and/or repairs leaking or damaged roofs
- Performs demolition work in the removal of walls, ceilings and other building components
- Performs routine maintenance/repair work in field or at shop on mobile equipment and small hand tools including: cement mixers, chippers, mulchers ,tractors, outboard motors, weed-eaters, bush hogs, boat trucks, push-rotary mowers, riding mowers, trailers, generators, valves, hoist motors, chain saws, sprayer equipment, post hole diggers, post drivers, pumps, spreaders, welders, and gasoline and electric hand tools
- Takes reports of problems with vehicles or equipment and handles or schedules major repairs or P.M. work with Fleet
- Maintains daily inventory of gasoline and diesel fuel storage
- Picks up supplies and repair parts from warehouse or vendors
- Maintains recreational areas and playground equipment
- Coordinates rehabilitation efforts on watershed grounds and storm water control devices
- Operates and works from boat
- May oversee Maintenance Workers I and II and Equipment Operators on difficult jobs as substitute Crew Chief.
- Drives a vehicle to conduct WSSC Water business
- Assists in maintenance of reforestation projects, chestnut orchard
- Assists in noxious weed control
- Maintains monthly fire extinguisher reports and oversees refilling per SOP
- Assist with wildlife management including deer, beaver, fish, bees
- Operate valves, tainter gates, and equipment associated with dam operations
- Performs other related duties as assigned
- Good knowledge of the standard methods, practices, and procedures of the carpentry, mechanical, plumbing, and painting trades and necessary safety precautions
- Ability to operate and maintain hand and power tools common to the landscaping and building trades
- Skill in the interpretation of electrical drawings, architectural drawings, sketches, specifications and operator’s manual
- Ability to conform to safety rules and regulations as established by OSHA and the State of Maryland
- Ability to operate a variety of construction equipment for prolonged periods of time often under adverse weather conditions
- High School diploma or equivalent
- 3+ years maintenance experience which includes experience in the following areas: landscaping and grounds maintenance, carpentry, painting, plumbing and routine maintenance/repair work on small engines
