We currently have an opportunity for a Senior Policy Advisor, based in Calgary, AB. Reporting to the General Manager, External Affairs, this role will be responsible for understanding and providing analysis and feedback on government and regulatory policy, with input to the advocacy framework to support our strategic direction. You will support Senior Management and various business units in developing and activating policy strategies. This role will require the establishment of key relationships with external parties involved in influencing or setting policy such as regulatory bodies, industry groups, trade organizations and government representatives when and as required.
This is an 18-month temporary contract role.
- Understand key business and operational requirements that may be affected by government or regulatory policy, e.g. electricity, climate, environment
- Identify emerging and ongoing issues and opportunities in the external landscape, and develop integrated strategies and solutions to support the leadership team
- Provide thoughtful feedback on policy initiatives and develop key internal and external working relationships that align with operations objectives
- Keep the External Affairs team and senior leadership apprised of critical regulatory and political issues through the development of regular reporting tools and position papers
- Participate and advise in strategies that enhance PETRONAS Canada’s reputation with key stakeholders
- Post secondary education in a related field
- 5-10 years of progressive experience in government/policy engagement roles
- Strong understanding of the external and political landscapes in British Columbia, Alberta and the Federal government, including lobbying requirements and compliance processes
- A proven ability to develop clear, compelling presentation materials in MS PowerPoint for both internal stakeholders and external government audiences
- Strong policy writing skills, including drafting concise briefing notes with impact analysis and actionable recommendations for senior leadership and in interpreting and applying data to quantify impacts and strengthen policy recommendations.
- Strong project-management skills, with an ability to multi-task and remain flexible when priorities change
- Experience preparing successful applications for provincial and federal government funding programs.
- Experience with carbon tax compliance and offset strategies in industrial carbon pricing systems is an asset.
- Exceptional verbal communication and interpersonal skills
