Reporting to the Director, Government Relations and Policy, the Senior Government Relations and Policy Specialist
provides strategic leadership in reporting, information sharing and advocacy with the Provincial and Federal governments.
This is an exciting role, in a fast-paced environment, that supports the implementation of BC Hydro’s strategic priorities, in
alignment with the Province of British Columbia, and requires working collaboratively with business groups across the
company. The ideal candidate for this role can perform and advise under pressure and tight deadlines, understands the
policy development process, knows how governments make decisions, and is an expert relationship builder.
The successful candidate:
- Contributes to the development and implementation of a company-wide strategy for government relations that supports
BC Hydro’s mandate, priorities, and aligns with expectations set by Province of British Columbia.
- Works with Director to represent interests and enhance BC Hydro’s proactive approach in advancing shared
organizational priorities, positions, and activities across government, as well as with federal departments and other
provincial agencies.
- Responsively and proactively provides governments with timely and accurate information that expertly supports policy
development, decision making and all other ongoing information sharing needs.
- Builds and maintains deep relationships with subject matter experts, peers and senior leaders across BC Hydro to
advance specific objectives and provide guidance on working with governments on projects and key initiatives..
- Enhances BC Hydro's ability to coordinate with governments on priority issues and builds on our existing capability to
- Identifies needs and advises on strategy for substantive, ongoing communication across governments and ensures
proactive, clear, and easy to understand communication tools for complex, confidential and sensitive issues including
presentations, briefing notes and briefings on complex issues.
- Tracks, coordinates, and advises on meetings, briefings, meeting materials and information exchanged with governments
- Monitors, analyzes and reports on provincial and federal government legislation and policy development and
implementation, as well as key trends impacting the energy utilities.
- Maintains a broad understanding of key issues and interests across a broad network of stakeholders, interest groups,
associations and influencers that supports strategy, informs guidance and enhances briefings.
- A university degree in a related discipline such as political science, public policy, communications, economics, energy or
- A minimum of five (5) years of relevant policy and/or communications experience in a highly collaborative, deadline-driven
- Recent and relevant experience working with senior public sector executives and elected officials within a government
organization, with preference for the Province of B.C. and the Government of Canada.
- Experience with preparing briefing materials including conducting independent analysis of factors that impact corporate
- A depth of experience in strategic advisory roles.
- Demonstrated ability to achieve business plan objectives through work with stakeholders within a government
organization, with preference for experience with the Province of B.C. and the Government of Canada.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills, including taking complex and technical information and transforming it.
