Overview
The Sr. Engineer serves as a technical expert in building mechanical systems to educate potential customers about the benefits of steam and support the growth of our business. Reporting to the Section Manager for Steam Business Development, the Sr. Engineer will conduct field visits, review technical proposals, provide technical support to the team, and manage the construction process for new customer accounts. This role involves frequent field visits to various customer locations, from boiler rooms to board rooms. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who can confidently discuss the technical aspects and benefits of steam as a reliable and economical option for NYC's clean energy future. This position is based entirely in Manhattan.
Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
•Serve as the subject matter expert for engineering and provide technical support for the Steam Business Development team. Help customers and fellow employees understand how steam is used by different types of buildings and be able to speak about pros and cons of other energy sources. Review plans, provide guidance, and provide the Section Manager with recommendations.
•Ability to explain technical systems and concepts at all levels, from customers with no knowledge of steam to chief engineers and sustainability managers.
•Conduct energy assessments at customer buildings and generate a personalized report recommending ways to improve efficiency.
•Perform functions involved with bringing on new steam customers including opening and maintaining steam customer files, obtaining steam load letters from consulting engineers, calculating Pure Based Revenue (PBR) estimates, issuing Service Information Requests (SIRs), obtaining signed applications, deposits and rider payments from customers.
•Review new customer connection feasibility and assist sales team with technical details for new business proposals.
•Monitor and manage the status of new and existing steam customer projects through communication and collaboration with Steam Distribution Engineering and Steam Distribution teams.
•Project manage new service and modification requests and prepare materials for monthly or periodic meetings as requested by Upper Management.
•Accompany sales team/account managers on field visits to customers.
•Serve as a technical expert at customer meetings and major NYC real estate trade shows.
•Help conduct monthly hands-on customer seminars at the Learning Center as needed.
•Support new tasks and responsibilities to achieve the department's goals and objectives, while also supporting steam operations during steam/company system emergencies.
Qualifications
Required Education/Experience
•Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and 8 years of applicable engineering and or/design work experience in the construction/engineering of major mechanical projects for large buildings and/or developments, or
•Master's Degree in Engineering and 6 years of applicable engineering and or/design work experience in the construction/engineering of major mechanical projects for large buildings and/or developments.
Relevant Work Experience
•Exercise independent judgment and have excellent presentation skills, required.
•Experience in face-to-face technical review meetings, required.
•Understanding and interpretation of mechanical and architectural drawings, required.
•Ability to manage technical projects efficiently and effectively, required.
•Experience in designing, constructing, commissioning, and/or operating building mechanical systems (heating, domestic hot water, cooling), required.
•Experience in conducting mechanical system comparative financial analyses, required.
•Strong written and verbal communication skills, required.
•Good interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with personnel & customers on all levels, required.
•Knowledge of concepts, technical terms, and terminology of building energy systems, central utility systems or district steam systems equipment, required.
•Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, required.
•Experience in presenting to large real estate key decision makers, preferred.
•Experience selling energy or services of a technical nature, preferred.

•Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations

•Ability to work on elevated platforms, scaffolds, catwalks, roofs, and/or other equipment
•Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
•Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
•Stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday
•Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
•Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
•Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
Additional Physical Demands
•The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
•Must be able and willing to meet with customers on-site at their location.
