Role Overview

Reporting to the Director, Legacy Properties, the Site Manager - Kootenays is responsible for safe, environmentally and socially responsible, cost-effective, and strategic management and improvement of seven closed sites in the Kootenay region, British Columbia.

The Site Manager - Kootenays leads a small team of Project Managers and multidisciplinary consultants to plan and execute safe and cost-effective care & maintenance activities in compliance with permits and Teck standards, including water monitoring, tailings facility management, geotechnical monitoring and mitigation of underground features, and vegetation management. In addition, this role provides the opportunity to develop and implement long term strategic plans that improve environmental, social and commercial outcomes for the sites and the local communities.

This position is based out of Kimberley B.C. Travel to sites is required (10%).


Responsibilities

Be a courageous safety leader to ensure that all workers, including contractors, go home safe and healthy every day. Adhere to and sponsor safety and sustainability policies and procedures including overseeing the timely completion of all health & safety preparations, documentation, training for contemplated field activities, and supporting on emergency response planning and scenario testing.

Nurture and lead a high-performing, multidisciplinary site team, including staff, contractors and consultants, by providing clear direction and performance feedback. Analyze resourcing needs and provide recommendations on the team organization and composition.
Provide strategic leadership, an execution framework, and pace for the scoping, planning, and execution of annual care & maintenance activities, site investigations and technical studies, civil works, and closure improvements, with appropriate stage-gating of projects and deliverables.
Act as the designated Mine Manager under the BC Health, Safety, and Reclamation Code for Mines. Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, permits and other regulatory requirements.
Prepare and maintain realistic and comprehensive site documentation, including schedules, monthly budget forecasts, annual and five-year plans, long term liability estimates, and organization charts. Conduct timely and comprehensive internal and external reporting. Ensure proper controls, management and oversight of expenditures.
Develop and manage the site risk register, including identification, implementation and verification of controls, and development and implementation of risk treatment plans. Drive prioritization and decision making to mitigate risks to Teck, with proactive communication to senior leaders and other stakeholders internal and external to Teck.
Support and oversee the preparation, evaluation, recommendation, and award of contracts, including scopes of work, requests for proposals, schedules, cost estimates and qualified bidder lists. Provide rigorous and outcomes-based contractor management and oversight of consultant and contractor teams.
Provide technical leadership and oversight of environmental programs, including water sampling, hydrogeological investigations, ecological risk assessments, erosion and sediment control, and soil, vegetation, wildlife and waste management.
Support the development and implementation of Community of Interest engagement plans and participate in engagement events with the public and First Nations to build strong and mutually beneficial relationships. Ensure that Teck meets applicable commitments to First Nations for capacity building, employment, and business opportunities, in alignment with Teck’s Indigenous Peoples policy and commitment to reconciliation.
Support regulatory engagement, including advising on permitting requirements and/or developing and implementing agreements with the regulators.
Collaborate with, and mobilize resources of, subject matter experts in Legacy Properties and across Teck to ensure that site team(s) are leveraging internal expertise across a range of disciplines including health & safety, environment, closure, nature and biodiversity, water, tailings, and social responsibility.
Foster a culture of continuous improvement and lead improvement efforts for Kootenay sites and for Legacy-wide processes, focusing on reducing risk and cost.


Qualifications

Minimum 15 years demonstrated ability in project and/or mine site management, in a mining, environmental, civil, or mechanical engineering field.

Post-secondary degree in engineering, environmental sciences, industrial operations, maintenance, or a related field. Professional accreditation, such as PEng, RPF, PBio, PAg would be an asset.
Deep understanding, and demonstrated experience in the application, of British Columbia’s environmental legislation, permitting processes and the Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines in BC for closed mine sites.
BC Mines Supervisor Certification required. BC Shift Boss certification is an asset.
Demonstrated team leader with experience forming, inspiring, and managing a team of employees, contractors, and consultants from diverse fields and backgrounds.
Highly organized, with the ability to thrive in a complex and dynamic setting and prioritize competing demands.
Exceptional interpersonal, influencing, and communications (written and verbal) skills.

Pay Range: CAD $135,000 - $167,000 per year

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
