Department: Fabrication Reports To: General Manager
The Shop Manager will lead all operations within the steel fabrication shop, specializing in the production of steel stairs, handrails, and custom metal structures. This role requires strong leadership, a deep understanding of welding/fabrication techniques, and the ability to manage people, production schedules, safety, and quality control in a fast-paced environment.
- Oversee day-to-day operations of the welding and fabrication shop.
- Plan and coordinate fabrication jobs based on project deadlines and priorities.
- Ensure timely delivery of fabricated steel stairs, rails, and related products.
- Manage shop scheduling and assign tasks to welders and fabricators.
- Lead a team of welders, fabricators, fitters, and helpers.
- Provide direction, training, and mentorship to ensure team competency.
- Conduct performance evaluations and recommend training where necessary.
- Foster a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
- Monitor welding standards (MIG, TIG, Stick) and fabrication practices for compliance with industry codes (AWS, AISC).
- Inspect finished products for accuracy, weld integrity, and aesthetic standards.
- Coordinate with engineering/drafting departments to interpret fabrication drawings.
- Enforce OSHA regulations and company-specific safety protocols.
- Maintain a clean and hazard-free shop environment.
- Lead toolbox talks and safety meetings regularly.
- Monitor raw material inventory (steel tubing, plate, hardware) and reorder as needed.
- Manage tool maintenance, calibration, and procurement.
- Control waste and optimize material usage.
- Maintain daily logs, production records, and project status reports.
- Coordinate with project managers and estimators for workflow updates.
- Shift coordination for shop personnel
- Other duties as assigned
Anticipates material shortages and logistic conflicts, resolving them before they impact crews.
Arrives on site early, follows through on resource commitments, and updates PMs promptly.
Acts as the connective tissue between field, GC, and Project Management; shares crew success stories.
Maintains a positive, can‑do attitude that motivates crews even under tight schedules.
Re‑deploys crews or adjusts sequence quickly to accommodate site conditions.
