Ameristeel, a family-owned steel supply, processing, and fabrication company in Metro Detroit, is seeking a Shop Supervisor to oversee daily operations within our fabrication and manufacturing facility. This role is critical to ensuring production runs efficiently, safely, and to the highest quality standards. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in metal fabrication and machining, strong leadership skills, and the ability to coordinate multiple tasks while maintaining a safe, productive work environment.
The Shop Supervisor will oversee production involving Trumpf lasers, Trumpf press brakes, MIG and TIG welding, grinding and finishing, Bridgeport machining, saws, powder coating, and assembly operations.
- Supervise and manage shop personnel across all departments (laser, press brake, welding, machining, coating, and assembly).
- Ensure all operations meet Ameristeel’s high standards of safety, quality, and efficiency.
- Oversee production scheduling and workflow to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.
- Read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and job travelers to guide production.
- Conduct regular quality inspections of fabricated parts, weldments, and finished assemblies.
- Coordinate with purchasing and materials teams to ensure timely delivery of steel, consumables, and coatings.
- Implement and enforce OSHA regulations and Ameristeel’s safety standards across the shop floor.
- Provide training, mentorship, and ongoing development for team members in fabrication techniques and equipment use.
- Troubleshoot production issues on equipment such as Trumpf lasers, Trumpf press brakes, MIG/TIG welding stations, Bridgeports, saws, and powder coating systems.
- Support efficiency improvements, reduce downtime, and optimize throughput across fabrication and finishing lines.
- Proven experience in a supervisory or lead role within metal fabrication or manufacturing.
- Strong knowledge of fabrication processes, including laser cutting, metal forming, MIG/TIG welding, grinding, machining, powder coating, and assembly.
- Hands-on experience with Trumpf equipment (lasers and press brakes) is strongly preferred.
- Ability to read blueprints, CAD drawings, and shop documents effectively.
- Solid understanding of quality control methods and the use of precision measuring tools.
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations and safety standards in a fabrication/manufacturing environment.
- Strong organizational and scheduling skills to manage multiple projects and shop personnel.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills for effective collaboration across teams.
