We are seeking a Senior AC/DC Operational Readiness Engineer to join our System Performance Department in Winnipeg,
Manitoba.
Responsibilities:
•Perform AC and HVdc systems integration studies to minimize system interruption and ensure operational readiness and the
smooth integration of HVdc Reliability project work into the MH system.
•Perform studies and make recommendations to aid in the smooth coordination of HVdc Reliability and Sustainment activities.
•Perform relevant generator, synchronous condenser and control studies pertaining to the new NCS upgrade RAS and R44H
transmission line.
•Perform relevant steady state, small signal and transient stability studies to appropriately integrate HVdc and AC system
supplementary controls into the NCS and Southern systems to ensure the HVdc can be leveraged for appropriate damping
and frequency performance of the NCS and southern AC systems.
•Perform Reactive Reserve studies required to coordinate the HVdc system controls, filtering, generator and synchronous
condenser reactive power controls to ensure appropriate NCS and Southern System operation voltages and transmission
capability.
•Provide specialist advice and guidance regarding HVdc control and transmission outlet issues to other technical staff and to
other departments within Manitoba Hydro.
•Set out objectives and perform various specialized harmonic, power flow, dynamic, transient and small signal stability studies
using SSAT, TSAT, VSAT, PSAT, PSS/E, PSCAD, RTDS and FDHAP tools for operating guidelines, system testing,
disturbance analysis, and system expansion involving Manitoba Hydro multi-infeed HVDC system.
•Lead, conduct, direct and co-ordinate HVDC, AC and generator modelling in various platforms for operation studies and
influence the modelling to meet the operational requirements and relevant North American Electric Reliability Corporation
(NERC) standards.
•Prepare reports, commissioning procedures and operating guidelines and liaise with other departments, divisions and outside
agencies for safe, secure and economic operation of the Manitoba Hydro multi-infeed HVDC system and the adjoining AC
systems.
•Prepare and issue reports recommending operating guidelines related to filter/valve group/machine configurations,
self-excitation, damping, transformer switching and var-voltage control for the NCS and the Southern AC system.
- Lead, coordinate and provide input to the maintenance and improvement of ADHAP (Advanced HVDC Advisory Program - an
expert system based on operating guidelines) and coordinate with Control Centre Technology Systems and System Control
Departments to keep ADHAP up to date.
•Be an active contributor on commissioning teams during installation of new HVdc functions and features and Reactive Power
resources, as required.
•Within the scope of this position, ensure the compliance of the Manitoba Hydro multi-infeed HVDC, NCS and AC systems with
NERC standards.

Qualifications:
•Graduate in Electrical Engineering from a university of recognized standing with a minimum of seven years of related
experience in power system studies, ac/dc protection and control.
•Demonstrated knowledge of protection and controls for multiple infeed HVdc system and AC systems.
•Familiarity with power system equipment, HVdc, AC system and AC generator controls, and their functions, modelling and
performance in the power system.
•Demonstrated knowledge of power system behaviours, power system simulation tools such as PSCAD, RTDS, DSA tools,
FDHAP and PSS/E and technical knowledge of their application to multiple infeed HVdc, system and surrounding AC power
systems.
•Possess initiative and mature judgement with the ability to make and implement sound decisions.
•Post graduate degree or graduate courses related to power systems would be an asset.
•Must possess a valid Province of Manitoba Driver's Licence.
Salary Range
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $51.34-$70.34 Hourly,
$98,380.88-$134,784.78 Annually.
